Hawks open up 10 point lead in first place
The Exeter Hawks skated
to three more wins in Junior
"D" play this week to open up
a commanding 10 -point lead
over the second place Lucan
Irish.
As the schedule hits the
half -way mark, the locals are
14-2-1 and could conceivably
wrap up first place by
Christmas if they can con-
tinue their winning ways.
They play four games with
their three closest com-
petitors before Christmas and
victories would allow them to
coast to their first league
championship in some time.
The Hawks started the
week with a 9-1 romp in
Bothwell and then came home
to beat Lucan 4-1 and Seaforth
10-5. They also received some
help from Port Stanley as the
Lions beat Seaforth and
Tavistock to keep those teams
from advancing.
Tonight (Wednesday) the
Hawks will travel to Lucan
and Friday they host
Bothwell.
The Hawks now hold a one -
game lead in their series with
the Irish and the latter will be
out to even the score. Coach
Bob Rowe may have some
lineup adjustments for the
game as both Rick Linden -
field and Brian Horner suf-
fered leg injuries over the
weekend and captain Pete
Tuckey is also a doubtful
starter due to school exams.
Santa Claus will be on hand
Friday night at the rec centre
as it will be Family Night.
Families will be admitted for
an admission of $5 and kids
who write letters to Santa and
take them to the game will be
eligible for a draw for 12 piz-
zas provided by Angelo's
Pizzeria.
Bomb Barons
The long trip to Bothwell on
Wednestiay and a half-hour
delay in getting the game
underway failed to stall the
Hawks in their winning ways,
as they opened the week with
a 9-1 romp over the Barons.
They traded early goals
with the Barons and then
opened up a 3-1 lead in the
first and added two in the se-
cond and four in the third
while Pete Dearing shutout
the hosts after giving up the
early powerplay tally.
Dearing turned aside 32
shots in a steady perfor-
mance, while the Hawks pep-
pered 63 shots at the Bothwell
netminder.
Ed Willis, Bill Glover and
PeteTuckeypaced the scoring
with two goals each, while
Kris Bedard, Scott Brintnell
and Brian Horner registered
singles.
Tuckey added three assists
for a five -point night and pick-
ing up a pair of assists each
were Bedard, Horner and
Rick Lindenfield. Singles
went to Steve Prout, Steve
Batten, Mark Kirk, Brintnell,
Rich Lather and Willis.
The Hawks sat out 11 of the
19 penalties called.
Rook wins duel
Friday's encounter with the
Irish turned into a net -
minder's duel between Dave
Rook and Bart Powell and the
former ended up as the win-
ner as the locals posted a 4-1
verdict.
Both goalies were sharp
and the outcome was in doubt
until late in the third when the
Hawks finally wore Powell
down and scored on three
letter-perfect passing plays.
Exeter took a 1-0 lead ear-
ly in the first when Tony
Jones was left uncovered at
the corner of the net and con-
nected on a pass from Mike
Clark. That was the dif-

ference in the game until the
third as the goalies were
unbeatable.
Ed Willis finished off a neat
passing play from Rich
. Lather at the 3:54 mark of the
final stanza, but the lead was
quickly cut to one again as
Jeff Skinner beat Rook on a
play with Steve Glenn.
Brian Horner upped the Ex-
eter margin to 3-1 in less than
a minute when he finished off
a three-way passing play with
linemates Pete Tuckey and
Steve Batten and then Tuckey
pulled the game out of reach
on a powerplay at the 14:05
mark when he and Ed Willis
made three passes to finally
get Powell out of position.
Rich Lather also drew an
assist on the play.
Rook finished the game
with 38 saves, while Powell
had 29. Exeter took 11 of tl
20 minor penalties called ar
survived a. second perio
situation in which they playe

nunute.
Bomb Centenaires
Most fans were expecting a
tight battle when the locals
squared off with the
Centenaires on Sunday, but
the Hawks had little difficul-
ty in posting a 10-5 win. They
had earlier beat Seaforth 11-0.
The home crew jumped in-
to a 5-2 lead in the first and
were never seriously theaten-
ed'although their defensive ef-
fort was not up to its usual
standard as everyone ap-
peared more intent on pad-
ding his scoring statistics.
Derek Cooper, son of
former Exeter goalie Jerry
Cooper, was peppered with 48
shots by the Hawks, while
Pete Dearing faced 32 at the
other end.
Pete Tuckey, Ed Willis and
Rich Lather had two goals
each and singles were fired
by Brian Horner, Bill Glover,
Steve Prout and Steve Batten.
The two -goal men also had
two assists each as did Prout
and 'Bedard, while singles
were recorded by Horner and
Scott Brintnell.

Wednesday night Hugh
Dietrich's goal midway
through the third period and
an empty net score by Steve
Sage his fourth goal of the
game gave the Saints their
victory over the Mohawks.
Peter Irwin scored the
other two goals for the Frank
Funston coached College
club.
Rick FunSton and Brian
Mercer each scored two goal
to lead the Mohawks in a scor-
ing way. The odd goal was
fired by Jeff Fuller.
The loss snapped an in-
credible winning streak for
the Mohawks of 15 games
dating back to February 13 of
the 1982-83 season.
A pair of goals in a space of
25 seconds early in the third
period br ke a 5-5 tie and
enabled the Mohawks to go on
and beat the Sherwoods in
Hensall Thursday night.
More than half of the game
scoring took place in the first
20 minutes of play as each
team scored four times, but,
could manage only one apiece
in the middle frame.
In the first period, Paul
McClinchey, Rob Pryde,
Terry Caldwell and Jamie
Caldwell were the Hensel)
marksmen with Greg Camp-
bell, Paul Smale, Ken Varley
and Gary Davis assisting.

cessful shots for the Mohawks
with Barry Baynham, Brian
Mercer and Brian Blackburn
providing the passes. Mark
Cronyn and Rick Funston
shot the other two early Ex-
eter scores. Barry Baynham
assisted on both and Tom
Ryan and Steve Pfaff helped
on one e. ch.
In the middle frame Jamie
Caldwell notched the only
Hensall goal on an unassisted
effort and Mark Cronyn
replied for the. Mohawks on a
three-way passing effort with
Jeff Fuller and Tom Ryan.
The Mohawks blew the
game wide open in the final
session led by Ryan's two
quick scores with Steve Pfaff
and Jeff F'uller assisting.
Later in the period, Matt
Muller, Rick Funston and
Brian Taylor added insurance
goals with Ryan picking up
two assists for a six point
night. Helping on one goal
apiece were Funston, Fuller,
Mercer and Blackburn.
Sunday at Parkhill in the 9-6
victory for the Mohawks
Mark Cronyn was top goal
producer with three while ,Jeff
Fuller fired two successful
shots and Brian Taylor, Rick
Funston, Brian Mercer and
Brent Atthill scored in single

Pee wees
lose twice
The Exeter pee wees drop-
ped a pair of decisions this
week in regular Shamrock
minor hockey league action.
Wednesday in Exeter the
locals were defeated 8-4 by St.
Marys and Saturday they lost
in Strathroy to the home team
by a score of 4-1.
The only Exeter goal in the
loss to Strathroy came from
the stick of Henri DeBruyn on
a pass from Jeff Rowe.
After playing to a 2-2 tie for
the first two periods of play,
St. Marys broke the game
wideopenwithsix goals in the
third period and the Exeter
club could reply on two
occasions.
In the second period, Henri
DeBruyn converted a pass
from Tom Rolph and the two
combined to set up the second
goal which was registered by
Jeff Rowe.
The final two Exeter score
notched in the third period
were fired by Henri DeBruyn
on an unassisted effort and
Doug Clark on a pass from
captain Larry Lewis.
Irish lose
The Lucan Irish dropped
both games played this week
in the Ontario Hockey
Association Junior D western
grouping as they lost 6-3 to the
Tavistock Braves Wednesday
in Lucan and 5-1 to the Hawks
in Exeter, Friday.
In the loss to Tavistock, the
only first period Lucan goal
was notched by Rob Hardy on
a three-way effort with Brad
Hodgins and Bob Thirlwall.
Jeff Skinner converted a
pass from Wayne Urbshott
and John Medd hit the
Tavistock net in the final 20
minutes of play on a pass
from Steve Glenn to complete
the Irish scoring.

Tavistock with a two goal per-
formance. Scoring in single
