SSI girls basketball team ends great season
South Huron's senior girls
basketball team have finish-
ed their basketball season, for
some, just until next year but
for most WOSSA was their
final game. However, these
girls need not be disappointea
as they just completed the
most successful season of any
recent South Huron basket-
ball team winning the Huron -
Perth title.
On the weekend at WOSSA
the girls showed their deter -

mination and ability by
defeating Catholic Central
37-35. In the first time that a
South Huron team advanced
past the first round the team
was defeated 31-28 by
Strathroy in the semi-finals.
The win over CCH was a
thrilling victory and one of the
best games for South Huron.
The senior girls, just coming
off six draining days of ex-
ams, were spirited and hot
and seemed confident of their
ability.
SH had the added drive of
being ranked as an underdog.
They ranked sixth in the eight
team tournament, even as
Huron -Perth champions,
upset CCH as London Con-
ference champs who were
seeded in third place. It was
the first confrontation of the
two teams.
The matched ability kept
the game close and exciting
but the Panthers tight defense
kept the Crusaders shots out
of the hoop. CCH seemed to be
on the verge of a comeback in
the last quarter but SH
persevered with Leslie
Hunter-Duvar praying for the
final buzzer, signalling their
victory.
Hunter Duvar's fine ability
has kept her team in good
stead throughout the season.
A mid-season ankle injury
has been overcome so that
Leslie can play without much
pain.
Faye Gaiser led the superb
defence and scoring with 19
ts. Dominating under the
rds Alice Dietrich had 11
points, most from second -
chance baskets. Jackie Cot-
trell and Starr Jesney round-
ed out South Huron's five,
with competent
performances.
These starting five have
been instrumental for South
Huron's successful season but
it was the second string that
kept Exeter in the close game
against the very tough
Strathroy team in the WOSSA
semi-final.
South Huron appeared very
nervous and at time flustered
as their play often went out of
control. Being in the WOSSA
semi-final and knowing that
win would put them in a
challenging and learning ex-
perience against defending
OFSAA champs from Sarnia
St. Pats, excited South Huron
such that their play lacked the
control and lustre of the
previous night.
Strathroy opened up an ear-
ly lead and kept the Panthers
down by six or eight points for
most of the game. Three ear-
ly fouls by Faye Gaiser forc-
ed coach Terry O'Rourke to
take the gamble of pulling her
for the first half. South
Huron's ability to depend on
their bench became crucial as
the second string helped to
keep the game close.

Strathroy's tough and
disconcerting press
throughout the game was
challenging and tiring for Ex-
eter. Alice Dietrich's
agressive play and will-
ingness to sacrifice herself
was an inspiration to the
team.
South Huron miss d many
opportunities, especially on
the foul line. They made only
eight of 24 foul shots. Those
sixteen points may have turn-
ed the game. Coach O'Rourke
says, "I'm a firm believer in
having to be in the gym
shooting every day, at least
for a little while." The
pressures of exams took a lot
away from South Huron's
competent ability.
South Huron seemed sure to
be able to make a come back
in the final minutes but
Strathroy seemed equally
determined to keep their spot
in the final. With both Gaiser
and Dietrich fouling out in the
last minute South Huron's
hopes were dashed.
' Despite sitting out most of
the first half Gaiser still
scored 11 points. Jackie Cot-
trell had six points. First year
senior Irene Brand played ex-
tremely well to take Gaiser's
place both offensively and on
defense.
South Huron's major pro-
blem was that they tried
almost too hard for that win.
Forcing their shots only
achieved more frustration for
the eager team.
The team should be con-
gratulated for a very suc-
cessful season. Their overall
record was 24 wins and 8
losses, excellent and is proof
that hard work, determina-
tion and good coaching earns
success.
Members of the Huron -
Perth Champions and WOSSA
semi-finalist team are,
graduating players, Faye
Gaiser, Leslie Hunter-Duvar,
Alice Dietrich, Starr Jesney,
Dana Bozzatto, Judy Van Oss
and Brenda Bell; returnees
are Jackie Cottrell, Irene
Brand, Diane Willis and An-
drea Zimmer.
The girls' actual final game
will be for fun against the
Canadian Half Pints, a
midget comedy team. The
game is December 15 at 2:15
p.m.
Generals get
single 'point
The Exeter midgets newly
named the Generals gained a
single point in two Shamrock
minor league hockey games
this week.
Sunday in Forest, the
Generals got a goal from
Steve Gould on a pass from
Sean Whiteford with 51
seconds left in the third period
to get a 2-2 tie.
Monday again on the road,
the Generals dropped a close
6-5 decision to Strathroy.
In the game against Forest,
coach Ron Bogart said his
club was quite sluggish after
a week's lay off and took too
many penalties. Goal tenders
Jason Van Haarlen and Scott
Heywood played very well in
sharing netminding duties.
The other Exeter goal in ad-
dition to the tying one by
Gould was fined by Jim Lewis
on a three-way passing com-
bination with Andy Lerikos
and Terry Zachar.
In the 6-5 loss to Strathroy,
Bogart said his club
dominated play for the first
half of the game. He con-
tinued, "Richardson missed
on a breakaway and Lovie hit
the goal post. We could have
been up by 6-1, but!"
The Generals did take a 4-1
first period lead on goals by
George Pratt, Steve Gould,
Scott Lovie and Sean
Whiteford. Bill Fisher gained
two assists while Steve Gould,
Scott Bogart, Sean Whiteford
and Bud Richardson each
helped on one goal.
The only other Exeter goal
came in the third period from
the stick of John Hannah as
he converted a pass from
Scott Lovie on a power play.
Molting Hawks
break even
In two recent oldtimer
hockey games, the Exeter
Molting Hawks were edged
5-4 by Lucan and trounced
Belmont by a score of 10-1.
Against Lucan, the Molting
Hawks marksmen were Keith
Ahrens, Mike Cushman, Bob
Jones and Jack Chipchase.
In the victory over Bel-
mont, Bill Chipchase and
Keith Ahrens were the top
scorers with two goals apiece.
Firing single scores were Jim
Russell, Jim MacDonald,
Pete McFalls, Mike Cushman
and Bill Pincombe.
Bill Chipchase led the
playmakers with three assists
while Mike Cushman helped
on two goals and Keith
Ahrens, Jim MacDonald, Bob
Jones, Bob McDonald and
Walt Tiedeman each provid-
ed one pass for a goal.

Waxers win 64 over Goderich
The Exeter novice Waxers
now carry a season record of
five wins and four losses after
a hard fought physical game
against Goderich in Exeter
Sunday that ended with the
locals ahead 6-4.
The Waxers were led by
Jeff Lingard with a five point
effort including a hat trick.
Other goals were scored by
Steve Farquhar with two and
Ryan Stuart a single. Assists
were tallied by Ian Jean, Paul
Charrette and Jamie Van
Dam.
Crisp passing was noteably
displayed by Sean McCann,
Joel Smit hand Scott Parsons
which served well to secure
the victory.
Aggressivecorner play by
Trevor Taylor and a strong
blue line performance by
Shawn Webster contributed to
the victory. Darren Kintz
played a standup game in the
net turning away 11 shots.
