years and Hummel for 12.
The facilities the two men
have managed over the years
have frequently drawn words
of praise from visitors to the
community and they were
praised for the good jobs they
did by Mayor Shaw and Coun-
cillor Tom Humphreys who
made the presentations.
In words of appreciation to
the members of the various
boards and committees who
were in attendance, Shaw
said the town could not get
along without their efforts.
He noted that some of the
groups often have to make un-
popular or controversial deci-
sions, but it is always done

Industry, tourism committee
cite need for industrici mall
In their annual report to
council this week, the in-
dustry andtourism promotion
committee cited the need for
an industrial mall in the com-
munity where small
businessmen could have
available space as "starter
units".
To that end, Reeve Bill
Mickle, chairman of the com-
mittee, said he would be
prepared to discuss this type
of project with interested
entrepreneurs.
Mickle said he envisioned
units of approximately 1,000
square feet in such a mall and
said "the opportunities that
could develop from such
available space could be an
asset in the growth of our in-
dustrial area".
Last year, the committee
received inquiries from eight
industries looking for space,

and while two of those even-
tually settled in the communi-
ty, others had to go elsewhere
because they were looking for
empty buildings and there
were none available to fill
their needs here.
Presently, the committee
has two inquiries that are
"active" and Mickle told
council it was worth noting
that in the past 15 months,
four new manufacturing and
service businesses have
established here.
The committee's report
also cited the need for a good
motel complex for tourists,
businessmen, etc., that would
incorporate board or con
ference rooms for businesses.
Exeter's potential for in-
creased tourist activity has
been shown as being good by
a,t Ontario Ministry of
tourism survey, due to the
town's location near Lake
Huron and being situated on
a busy highway:
Mickle said that future
discussions will be under-
taken around this report.
In reference to the visits by
three German groups this
year, council learned that two
of those visitors will take
some time to come to any con-
clusions, but one is further
along to action "and we could
see a response within the next
six to 12 months".
The report also noted that
the new commercial banking
unit established by the Bank
of Montreal will be a benefit
to the community, as will the
attractive new Canadian
Tire Store which enhances the
core area and adds viability
to the shopping area.
Mickle indicated the com-
mittee will continue to be ag-
gressive in attempts to at-
tract industry to the com-
munity, but cautioned that
funding from council may
have to be increased as pro-
grams, such as advertising
and face to -face discussions
are held. to attract prospec-
tive firms.
In closing he paid tribute to
the work of the committee
members as well as the en-
thusiastic support and
assistance received from
council. the town staff, local
press, provincial authorities
and the community.
