The Exeter Hawks split a
pair of games this weekend,
but still managed to hold on to
a four -point lead in the nor-
thern division of the Western
Junior "D" loop.
The locals, who are now
11-2-1, virtually gave
Tavistock an 8-7 win on the
Braves home ice, Friday, but
rebounded to shell Thedford
by a 7-2 margin on Saturday.
Exeter still enjoy three
games in hand over the se-
cond place Lucan Irish (9-7-1)
who last twice to the Seaforth
Centenaires before reboun-
ding to keep pace with the
Hawks with an 8-5 triumph
ove ^ the Browns.
Seaforth (7-5 1) also have
three games in hand over the
Irish and trail them by only
three points but the
Centenaires also lost 8-2 to
Mt. Brydges to slow their
move. on second place.
Over the next week, the
Hawks still have a chance to
open up some daylight on the
rest of the squads, or face the
consequences of having the
pack catch up.
Tonight (Wednesday) they
make the long haul to face the
bruising Bothwell crew and

with a three goal effort while
Dave Murray and Steve
Pletsch notched two goals
apiece and Jim Campbell
counted in single fashion.
In Friday's defeat in
Seaforth, John Medd fired the
only first period Lucan goal
on a pass from Jamie Shipley.
Both Irish second period
markers came on power
plays with Mark Bannon and
Steve Glenn being .the
marksmen. Wayne Urbshott
assisted on both and Jamie
Shipley and Jeff Skinner pick-
ed up single assi,ts.
The Irish scoring was com-
pleted in the final period as
captain Paul Wraith and
Dave Egan counted. Getting
assists were Jeff Skinner,
Brent Bannerman, Mark
Bannon and Wayne Urbshott.
Jeff Pauli with a four goal
effort was tops for Seaforth.
Dave Murray notched a pair
of scores and Murray Guy,
Dave McIlwain, JohnHicknell
and Jim Campbell notched
single scores.
Three third period goals
provided the Irish with Sun-
day's 8-5 win over Thedford.

Despite the loss of two of
three games this week, the
Lucan Irish continue to hold
down second place in the OHA
Junior D northern division,
but, the Seaforth Centenaires
are getting closer.
The Irish dropped back-to-
back decisions to Seaforth by
scores of 8-4 in Lucan,
Wednesday and 10-5 in
. Seaforth, Friday night. They
got back to winning ways Sun-
day night with an 8-5 victory
in Thedford.
The Lucan club leads
Seaforth by three points, but,
the latter has three games in
hand.
The Tavistock Braves wit:
be at the Lucan arena tonight;
Wednesday tor an 8:15 p.m.
contest and the Irish will be in
Exeter Friday night to meet
the Hawks.
John Medd led the Lucan
scoring machine in Wednes-
day's loss to Seaforth with a
hat trick performance. Two of
his scores one of which was on
a power play came on
unassisted efforts. The third
carne on a pass from Greg
Smith.
The other Lucan marker
came from the stick of Mark
Bantams win
in houseleague
In a bantam house league
hockey game Saturday, Ex-
eter scored a convincing 7-2
win over Mitchell.
The. Exeter youngsters
jumped in front quickly with
three unanswered goals in the
first period.
Shawn Forsythe opened the
Exeter scoring on an
unassisted effort, Angelo
Vilos converted a pass from
Graham Arthur and Jeff
Playfoot hit the Mitchell net
on passes from Forsythe and
t,'ilos.
The only middle frame Ex-
eter score came from the
stick of M Vanderlaan on a
pass from Rob McKnight.
in the third period, Angelo
Vilos and Jeff Playfoot each
notched their second goal of
the game with Al Vanderlaan
picking up an assist. Laurie
Chalmers completed the Ex-
eter scoring on a three-way
passing combination with
Rob McKnight and Shawn
Forsythe.
Scoring for Mitchell were
Chuck Riegel and Craig
Risfeau.

Kevin Albrecht of the
Tavistock Braves is the
leading point a -iter in the

sion with 15 goals and 15
assists for 30 points.
Pete Tuckey of the Exeter
Hawks and Terry Ross of
Tavistock are tied for second
spot with 27 points apiece.
Tuckey has 17 goals and 10
assists. Ile is tied with Paul
Walker of Thedford for most
goals scored.
Lester Arts of Lucan is
fourth with 12 goals and 14
assists for 26 points and
Walker is next with eight
assists to go with his 17 goals
for 25 points.
John McIntyre of Thedford
is fifth with 24 points and Bill
Glover of Exeter is next with
11 goals and 12 assists for 23
points.
Mike Clark of the Hawks
and Lucan's Steve Glenn are
deadlocked with 21 points and
.Ed Willis of Exeter completes
the top 10 with 20 points.

At 36 seconds of the third
period, Mark Bannon counted
what proved to be the winning
goal on a pass from Steve
Glenn. A dozen minutes later
on a power play, John Medd
converted a pass from Ban-
non and with less than three
minutes to go Wraith scored
fror,i Medd.
Paul Walker scored four
times to head the Thedford
scoring thrust. The fifth goal
was notched by Bev Cloud.
then they host the Lucan Irish
on Friday in an important
game as the schedule nears
the mic: way mark.
Sunday night, they'll have
the Centenaires at the rec
centre and the following
Wednesday they square off
with the Irish once again in
Lucan.
Drop second verdict
Friday night's loss in
Tavistock to the defending
OHA champs was only the se-
cond defeat of the season for
the locals, who blew a three -
goal lead with some costly
penalties and defensive
mistakes.
The Braves scored four
goals in the final 10 minutes to
post an 8-7 triumph. Two of
the tallies came on
powerplays and two were
scored when defenders were
stopped trying to lug the puck
out of their own end.
The defending champs
started quickly as they
jumped into a 2-0 lead, but the
Hawks whittled the margin to
4-3 by the end of the initial
frame and then took control
with three unanswered tallies
in the middle frame.

off to WOSSA
South Huron's senior girls'
Huron -Perth championship
basketball team play at
WOSSA this Friday at
Westminster High School in
West London.
Early this week coach
Terry O'Rourke had not yet
been informed of playing time
or seeding. South Huron's
game will either be at 3:30,
5:00, 7:00 or 8:30, Friday
evening. A win would send the
girls into the semi-final at
12;30 or 2:00, Saturday.
The eight qualifying teams
are ranked, supposedly by in-
put from the coaches. Last
year, as runner-up Huron -
Perth team, South Huron was
seeded seventh. As cham-
pions this year the team
should rank higher.
Second -place Goderich is
challenging London con-
ference seconders,
Westminster Wildcats, for a
spot at WOSSA. South Huron
had been defeated twice ear-
ly in the season. by
Westminster.
Coach O'Rourke laments
the, disadvantage his girls
must endure as they are cur-
rently in the midst of exams.
Their basketball must suffer,
especially as over half the
team is in their final year.
However O'Rourke says, "In
other years, they've come
through, despite being away
Sherwoods get two
South Huron victories
The Hensall Sherwoods
scored a pair of victories this
week in the South Huron in-
termediate hockey league as
they defeated the Zurich
Buckeyes 8-3 Thursday night
and the Parkhill Pirates 9-6,
Sunday.
Three unanswered goals in
the second period allowed the
Sherwoods on the way to their
8-3 win over Zurich.
The first period was close
with Terry Caldwell, Paul
McClinchey and Scott Jesney
scoring for ffensall and Mar-
vin Merner and Scott Consitt
replying for the Buckeyes.
Rob Pryde and Rob Smale
each picked up two Ilensall
assists and Darren Moir and
Lloyd Allen helped oh one
score each.
For Zurich. Consitt scored
on an unassisted effort and
Merner hit on a three-way
passing combination with
Pon Rader and goalie Kevin
Geoffrey
Terry Caldwell fired two of
the second period Hensall
scores to up his game total to
three and Lloyd Allen getting
two assists and Dave
Kinsman, Rob Pryde and
Scott Jesney picking up one
apiece.
Early in the third period,
Ron Rader registered the
final Zurich score on a pass

Sherwoods notched a pair of

over Parkhill Ken Varley was
the top scorer with a four goal
performance while Rob

playmakers with four assists
each to their credit. Captain

Parkhill with a pair of suc-
cessful shots and Harvey

George Jongeneel and Dan
Lagerwerf scored in single
fashioa.
Juniors set
trust fund
Middlesex Junior Farmers
have established a $2,000 trust
fund, to be adininistered by
the Board of Education, to
provide scholarships for two
secondary school graduates
who enrol in post -secondary
agricultural programs in an
accredited college or
university.
The scholarships will be
known as the Middlesex
Junior Farriers' Interna-
tional Plowing Match 1982
Award.
The interest from the fund
will be shared equally by two
students, one qualifying for a
Secondary School Graduation
Diploma and the other quali-
fying fora Secondary School
Honour Graduation Diploma,
who obtain the highest
average in their six hest
grade 12 or grade 13 credits
respectively
The Junior Farmers
established the award to com-
memorate the holding of the
1982 international Plowing
Match and Farm Machinery
Show in. Middlesex County
and to recognize the great
degree of student participa-
tion and Board of Education
support of, and participation
in, the event
The first awards will be
made to students graduating
at the end of the present
school year

keep their competitive edge

Pee wees get
only one point
The Exeter pee wees gain-
ed one point in two Shamrock
minor hockey games this
week.
Wednesday on home ice at
the South Huron Rec Centre,
the pee wees played to a 2-2
tie with Merton and Saturday
in Goderich they dropped a
6-1 decision.
In the draw with Ilderton,
Doug Clark scored on an
unassisted effort for Exeter
and provided the pass fora
'successful shot by Rob
McLelland.
Scoring one goal apiece for
Ilderton were captain Jack
Legg and Matt Talbot.
The only Exeter goal in the
loss to Goderich came from
the stick of Mark Burton on a
pass from Doug Clark.

in as the Braves came storm-
ing back.
Exeter won the penalty
parade by a 15-8 margin and
were out -shot 41-33. Pete
Dearing worked between the
pipes for the Hawks and ap-
peared a little rusty in mak-
ing his first start since
beating the Braves on
November 13.
Ed Willis and Tony Jones
paced the scoring attack with
two goals each, while Kris
Bedard, Mike Clark and Rick
Lather added the singles. Bill
Glover, Rick Lindenfield and
Bedard had two assists each,
while Clark and Steve Prout
registered one.
Bomb Browns
Still smarting from their
loss, the Hawks took out their
frustration against the Thed-
ford Browns the following
night and only the exceptional
work of goalie Randy Thomp-
son kept the score to a respec-
table 7-2 margin.
Exeter pumped 67 shots at
the Browns netminder as they
dominated play throughout,
scoring three times on the
powerplay. Thompson had 43
saves over the first two
periods and kept the Hawks to
a 3-2 lead, but he finally fell
victim to the barrage in the
third as the locals scored four
unanswered tallies.
Mike Clark and Scott Brint-
nell had two tallies each,
while singles came off the
sticks of Steve Batten, Steve
Prout and Tony Jones. Bill
Glover and Brian Horner
helped set up two of the taliies
with single assists going to
Kris Bedard, Mark Kirk, Pete
Tuckey, Rich Lather and
George Tomes.
Dave Rook stopped 22 shots
to record the win and the
Hawks lost the penalty
parade for only the second
time this season as they sat
out nine minors and the
Browns had 10.

Atoms get Shamrock point
The Exeter atom hockey
club gained a single point in
two Shamrock minor league
games this week. Friday they
lost 6-1 to Parkhill and Sunday
it was a 2-2 tie with St. Marys.
The only Exeter goal in the
toss to Parkhill came from
the stick of David Schwindt on
a three-way passing combina-
tion with Jim Ahrens and
Allan McFalls.
Scoring in single fashion for
Parkhill were Derek Turner,
Derek Vanderheyden, Paul
Woodburn, Shawn Glavin.
Shayne Robinson and Todd
Malcolm.
Two goals with less than
two minutes to go in the third
period gave the Exeter
youngsters their 2-2 draw with
St. Marys.
Jason Hern notched the
first goal on a three-way ef-
fort with Craig MacEachern
and Jason Heywood and
Heywood shot the equalizer
with one minute to go with
assists going to David
Schwindt and Hern.
The goal getters for St.
Marys were Scott Riddell and
Scott Smale.
A week earlier, Strathroy
defeated the Exeter, atoms by
a score of 9-3
