By Ross Haugh
The first annual Exeter Molting Hawks oldtimers
hockey tournament on the just concluded weekend was
an unqualified success.
Not only was the brand of hockey excellent, but,
visitors were happy with the operation of the tourney
and the facilities at the South Huron Rec Centre. Most
of the teams will be pleased to be invited again next
year.
The 12 teams were divided equally into A and B
categories and the groupings were very competitive
with only one of the two dozen games being a little
lopsided.
Five minutes of overtime failed to decide a winner
in the B semi-final and final games and shoot-outs were
necessary.
The Zurich Has Beans were eliminated by East
T.ondon in the penalty shot type of shoot -off and Hen-
sall won the A championship in a similar situation.
The shoot-outs are exciting and require complete
concentration and a wide eye from the spectators as one
player from each team in converging on the opposing
goal tender at the same time.
Former pro Jack Chipchase who plays regularly
with the Molting Hawks scored the winner for Hensall
on the fifth and final shot after only one of the first four
scored for each team.
Another highlight was the appearance of Reg Ham-
mond of the London Intracity team .. The
significance of this player was the fact the number on
his sweater was the same as his age and it was 6912.
That's right. He is 69 and a half years of age and
took a regular turn on defence and certainly did his job
in a very commendable manner. '
Congratulations to the Molting Hawks on handling
an excellent tournament. All team members pitched in
to take care of the wide variety of duties necessary in
such a venture and the wives were right there providing
great meals.
Another coning up
While on the subject of hockey tournaments, the
scene switches to the south this coming weekend with
the fourth annual Lucan Cup.
A total of 16 teams will be at the Lucan arena for
action beginning Friday night and continuing through
Saturday and Sunday with a host of well-known players
competing.
The most impressive list of players is contained in
the Mitchell lineup with ex -pros Walt Tkaczuk, Dennis
Dupere and Tom Miller and former junior and senior
stars Don Vipond, John Wilson and Dan Seguin.
On the London Ted Dilts roster are fellows like
Larry Riggin, Hugh Mitchell, Wally Keating, Pete
Lochead and Randy English and Doug Latta, Paul
Medd, Marty Wraith and Cec Nickles will be in the
Lucan lineup.
The A championship team, the one that goes
through the tournament undefeated will receive the
Lucan Cup and $1,000 and each team member will get
a diamond ring.
More honours
The chances of the Ohio State Buckeyes making it
to the NCAA championship hockey tournament in
March continue to be high as the team is off to a flying
start.
Paul and Perry Pooley in their third year at the Col-
umbus, U1uro school are contributing a lot to the success
of the team.
Paul leads his team and the league in scoring and
Perry is third in the Buckeyes statistics. Added to this
is the naming of Paul Pooley as the player of the week
not only for his club, but, for the entire Central Col-
legiate Hockey Association.
Ohio State coach Jerry Welsh said Paul, an
accounting -marketing major in the mainstay of the
Buckeyes front line and does time on both the top power
play and penalty killing units.
Welsh went on to say, "Paul is off to his best start
in a Buckeye jersey. If his record to date is projected
over our 37 game schedule, the numbers should garner
all -America recognition."
After this bit on Paul was written we received
another news release from Ohio State telling us Perry
had a terrific weekend with four goals and four assists
in two wins over Illinois and was named Buckeye player
of the week.
We will have more on these accomplishments next
week.
Different Lions
The performance of the Detroit Lions Thursday
afternoon and the British Columbia Lions three days
later were quite contrasting.
The Detroit club came up with their best perfor-
mance Thanksgiving afternoon in walloping the Pitt-
sburgh Steelers 45-3 while the BC Lions were lasing the
Grey ('up to the Argos who waited 31 years to bring
home a national title.
Along with a Minnesota Vikings loss Sunday, they
are tied with the Lions for first place and the two clubs
meet in what could amount to a playoff battle Monday
night at the Silverdome.
While the Detroiters are hot, they have a jinx to
overcome if they are to beat the Vikings Monday night.
For the past eight years, the Lions have lost their first
game after Thanksgiving.
