Area resident seeks people to debate issue of disarmament
Fellow Humans:
What hit me hardest about
Global Television's Sunday
night showing of 'The Day
After' was the president's
post-war message.
His first statement concern-
ed the state of the country's
military installations. The
mind boggles at some peo-
ple's priorities.
His failure to express any
regret for the destructive ac-
tions that had been taken.
His galling pretense of nor-
malcy in referring to the
desecrated remains of his
land in the glowing rhetoric of
pre -destruction times i.e.
America the beautiful, the
great, the glorious....
His assurance that the
country's political leaders
would re -assemble and con-
tinue to govern the land
(presumably in the same
manner, using the same
'logic', continuing the same
policies as those they had us-
ed in the past).
This last statement was the
most frightening of all to me
because it reveals the fact
that some peopleneverlearn
- not if a brick house were to
fall on them, not if radioactive
fallout were to rain on them
and not even if their whole
world were to come tumbling
down on them.
It seems to me that the
issue of disarmament boils
down to the two basic ques-
tions. 1. What's the worst
thing that could happen to use
if we disarm? 2. What's the
worst thing that could happen
to us if we don't disarm?
The answers ( or options )
are - 1. Soviet -styled govern-
ment; 2. annihilation of
mankind. The choice of the
first option offers hope. The
choice of the second option of-
fers none.
With an abiding faith that
goodness and wisdom will
prevail over eviP and ig-
norance (and any style of
government) I choose disar-
mament with a firm resolu-
tion to promote and to live in
goodness and seek wisdom.
Evil can spread only if we let
it.
Whatoption do you choose?
I invite any and all com-
ments and discussion concer-
ning the urgent issues of the
disarmament debate with the
promise to remain non-violent
at all times.
