"My ministry will be donating $25,000 to offset the costs of restoring Cardno Opera Hall which was built in 1877," said the Honourable Susan Fish, Minister of Citizenship and Culture. "The opera hall is the first building to be restored in Seaforth, which has one of the few com- pletely historical main streets remaining in Ontario." The $25,000 is a corporate sector grant from the Building Rehabilitation and Improvement Campaign (BRIC). BRIC complements the work -of the Ontario Heritage Foundation, an agency of the ministry and various grant programs that provide funds to conserve structures considered to be of particular historical impor- tance to the province. A total of $8.5 million has been allocated to the BRIC program. The grant will be used to repair the exterior of the building including the brickwork, the windows, the roof and the historic four - faced clock which has been overlooking the town for more than 100 years. The total cost of the restora- tions should be $52,000. Com- pletion of the former opera hall is set for 1984 and will then be used for community groups and commercial enterprises. Publish news on wood heat A report designed to aid homeowners considering wood as home heating fuel was released today by On- tario Energy Minister Philip Andrewes. The report, entitled An Old Flame Rekindled: A Guide to Residential Wood Heating, is written for the serious wood heat user. It is also a guide for those who want to get the most for their wood -heating dollar. The report outlines all the elements that go into the wood decision; namely, the cost and types of wood; cost of equipment and upgrading; incentives; and payback period. Wood -burning equip- ment, woodstoves, fireplaces, inserts, wood furnaces, back- up systems, and chimneys are all reviewed in a fairly detailed manner. The booklet also contains information on installation, maintenance, and safe operating pro- cedures as well as a list of On- tario residential stove manufacturers. After decades of relative obscurity, wood is making a comeback as a home heating fuel in Ontario. Recent ad- vances in the design of wood heating systems have made the use of this abundant and renewable fuel convenient, ef- ficient and safe. Copies of the report are available at a cost of $5.00 from the Ontario Government Bookstore, 880 Bay Street, 5th Floor, Toronto, Ontario M7A 1 N8. Any member who produced grain corn in 1983 and who plans to store it for sale after harvest is eligible to apply. Crib corn and high moisture corn are included in this eligibility. Membership applications are available from all county offices of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, at many county elevators, and from the Association office at 292 Speedvale Avenue West. Guelph, N1H IC-' (519-837-1660). The .Chairman of the Association's Advance Pay- ment Committee, Ed Kalita of West Lorne, also advises that new members will automatically be mailed ap- plication forms for the Ad- vance Payment Program when their membership ap- plications are received. Deadline for receipt of Ad- vance Payment applications is December 15, 1983. The Advance Payment Pro- gram involves interest-free money made available by Agriculture Canada to the On- tario Corn Producers' Association, which enables growers to store corn for sale after harvest while receiving part payment in advance. Payment is advanced at the rate of $60 per tonne of grain corn. Maximum amounts of money available are $15,000 for an individual producer, $30,000 for a partnership or corporation with two active members, and $45,000 with three or more active members. Advances must normally be repaid with the first corn sold after they have been issued. However, an option exists that, where a producer has a contract for corn delivery at some distant date - for example, June or July of 1984 - the advance can be assumed to apply on this con - Bev Rabbets stars in St. Marys play The St. Marys Community Players completes its fifth and 1983 season with two one act plays - Choices by M. Lucille Grant and BlackCom- edy by Peter Shaffer. Perfor- mances begirt at 8 p.m. November 16-19 with a matinee only on November 20. The schedule continues with evening performances November 2,3-26. Choices is a dramatic con- frontation between a mother and her illegitimate daughter whom she gave up for adop- tion shortly after birth. After years of fantasizing about the birth mother she never knew, the daughter finds her quite different than she expected. This play is directed by Fred Steinmetz, an accomplished flutist who has been involved in St. Marys Community Players productions since the groups inception. The cast of two is Carol Robinson, well known to amateur theatre audiences for her roles in a number of memorable musical produc- tions. Linda Ham who takes the role of the mother in Choices has also performed in amateur theatre productions in the past. Director Lucille Grant has been the recipient of two theatre festival awards. Black Comedy is under the direction of Carl Zvonkin. He is well known to local au- diences for his major roles in the group's musical produc- tions. Author Peter Shaffer received much acclaim for hia plays, Royal Hunt of the Sun and Equus in London, England and in New York. In the romantic lead role for this farcical comedy is Kent May. May has appeared in the company's previous musical and comedy produc- tions. Leading ladies are Doris Thorpe, Rosie Rice and Donna Hilchey. Provided the contract is large enough to cover- the entire advance, other corn can be sold at earlier dates without affec- ting the producer's advance repayment obligations.
