At ' ach home game of the Kitchener Rangers of the
Ontario Junior Hockey League, one of the players is
featured in the program as the Ranger Point Man.
In a recent game against Sault Ste. Marie
Greyhounds, Exeter native Dave Shaw was highlighted
as the Point Man.
Following are the program comments on Shaw:
"The second round draft pick by the Rangers in the
1981 June junior draft has quickly silenced his critics
and matured into probably the best overall defenceman
in the OHL today.
Dave is in his third year with the Rangers and has
the ability to as they say 'do it all'. Capable of playing
40 minutes when called upon "Shawzee" can control the
speed of the game both offensively and defensively.
Last year in his second year in the league, he
amassed an incredible 74 points on 18 goals and 56
assists. His reputation as one of the strongest players
and best scrappers in the league is a tremendous asset
to the team and other clubs are a bit hesitant to try and
intimidate his team mates while Dave is patrolling his
position.
Drafted and signed by the Quebec Nordiques as
their first round selection, the Rangers were fearful of
losing Shawzee to the NHL. .
Coach Tom Barrett was relieved to get Dave back
in a Ranger uniform and certainly his value is again
reflected in the way he controls the game and will surely
play a big part in the Ranger destiny as the 1983-84
season progresses."
Lincolns doing well
The St. Marys Lincolns continue to hold onto'first
placein the Ontario Hockey Association Junior B
Western league and two former area minor stars are
contributing plenty to the St. Marys cause.
Jeff Shipley of Lucan and Exeter's .L-)hn Kernick
are well up in the individual scoring standings for the
Lincs. In the latest statistics we have seen Shipley and
Ku -nick each have 21 points and are tied for fifth place
on their team.
They each scored a goal Friday nightas the Lin-
colns defeated the second place Sarnia Bees and open-
ed up a three point first place lead.
Fun hockey coming
Sunday afternoon at the South Huron Rec Centre
fans will get a chance to have a few laughs as Team
10 of CFPL television in London drops in for an exhibi-
tion game.
Team 10 including such stars as Eric Sorensen, Jay'
Campbell, Jim Swan along with Rodney and '.he Rink
Rat will tangle with the Exeter Molting Hawks
While the Molting Hawks are classed as oldtimers
and must be oyer the age of 35 they still are capable
of playing a good brand of hockey and we would predict
Team 10 will need a lot more than some luck and magic
from manager Pete James in order to win.
The game should provide lots of good entertainment
beginning at 2 p.m. Proceeds will be used for communi-
ty betterment.
Shuffleboard catching on
if the enthusiasm and interest shown in recent
weeks to the fairly new sport of shuffleboard is any in-
dication, it will be very successful.
Thanks to the efforts of Marshall Dearing and
Lorne Marshall more than 75 Exeter and area seniors
are participating in the game of shuffleboard three
afternoons per week at the South Huron Rec Centre.
Four courts have been lined up at the west side of the
Rec ('entre auditorium and action was fast and furious
when we dropped up Wednesday afternoon.
Throughout the winter months, ladies will play
Tuesdays. mixed play for both men and ladies will be
held Wednesdays and the men will be in action Thurs-
day afternoon.
The great Gretzky greater
How great No. 99 of the Edmonton Oilers is con-
tinues difficult to deter :nine. Ile seems to be getting bet-
ter and better.
Wayne Gretzky is off to a flying start in his first 18
games for the Oilers this year and has 23 goals and 31
assists for a total of 54 points. That's an average of ex-
actly three points per game. At this rate he should have
little trouble in breaking his own mark of 212 points in
a single season.
Gretzky's great play recently against the Winnipeg
Jets brought praise from coach 'Tom Watt who said it
was a pleasure to see him in action. A couple of hours
later Watt was fired and replaced by general manager
John Ferguson.
The Oilers who fell four straight to the New York
islanders in the latest Stanley Cup final are far out in
front in the overall standings and will likely stay right
there.
They have 31 points with only two losses to date and
a seven point margin over the second place New York
Rangers.
The closest race in the National Hockey league is
in the Norris division where only three points separate
the first place Chicago Black Hawks and Toronto Maple
Leafs from the fifth place Minnesota North Stars.
The Leafs with five losses in their last six games
are fortunate to be at the top. it just happens that the
other four Norris teams are playing as badly or worse.
The Toronto injury list continues to grow. The latest
is defenceman Jim Korn who joins Mike Palmateer,
Terry Martin, Peter Ihnacak, Walt Podduhny, Gary
Nylund and Frank Nigro in sick hay.
The Leafs have the league's poorest goals against
record having allowed 88 scores by the opposition. The
New Jersey Devils who have only four points in the
basement of the Patrick division have allowed 78 goals.
Hawks take over first place in junior D grouping
The Exeter Hawks
registered back-to-back home
ice wins this weekend to final-
ly move into sole possession of
first place in the northern
division of the Western Junior
"D" loop. Their 7-1-1 record
gives them a two-point lead
over the second place Lucan
Irish (6-5-1) and five more
than Seaforth (4-3-2).
The Hawks nipped Lucan
4-2 on Friday and then rallied
in the third period on Sunday
to post a 7-4 triumph over the
defending O11A champion
Tavistock Braves.
Exeter have three games in
hand over the Irish, but that
may not be as significant as
it would appear as those
games are represented by
road trips.
To date, the Hawks have
played two-thirds of their
games in .ne friendly confines
of the rec centre but that will
quickly change as they play
five of their next six games
away from home.
Tonight (Wednesday ) they
travel to Belmont to meet the
southern division leading
Bombers and then return
home for a crucial contest
against Seaforth Centenaires
on Friday. The next night
they go to Mt. Brydges to bat-
tle the hard-hitting Bulldogs
who are second in the south
and have two games in hand
over the Bombers.

Arts pulled Lucan back to a
3-2 deficit at the 3:40 mark of
the third when he picked up a
loose puck in the Exeter zone
and scooted in alone to beat
Rook for the second time.
Later in the period, with the
Hawks in penalty trouble,
Arts missed a chance to knot
the count. He had been left
alone in front of the net and
his point blank shot was stop-
ped by a sprawling Hook, but
the rebound ended back up on
Arts' stick and he missed the
open net when his shot when
right over the top.
Ed Willis finally pulled the
game out of reach when he
raced down the ice with Bill
Glover on a two -on -one and
deflected Glover's pass bet-
ween Powell's legs.
Rook, named first star of
the game, recorded 38 saves,
while number two star Powell

parade with two each
locals had trouble getting led the assist
anything together in a team
effort and had to rally from a
deficit to post the 7-4 triumph.
The Hawks scored three
unanswered goals in the final
stanza and then relied on
some big saves by netminder
Pete Dearing in the final few
minutes to preserve the win,
their second over the Braves
this season.
The Braves took only 30
seconds to get on the sheet as
they took advantage of an er-
rant pass to break in un-
molested on Dearing. He
managed to get most of the
shot, but the disc trickled in
behind.
Ed Willis evened the count
at the 4:51 mark on a play
with Rich Lather. but the
Braves then jumped into a 3-1
lead as they took advantage
of some poor checking. The
third tally was on a
powerplay.
A deft solo effort by Pete
Tuckey cut the margin to 3-2
before the teams left the ice,
but Tavistock quickly regain-
ed their two -goal margin as
they blinked the light at the
1:01 mark of the second,
again on a powerplay.
Tuckey cut that to one on
another strong individual ef-
fort and Bill Glover evened
the count at 4-4 on a
powerplay at the 14:48 mark.
Glover had been beaten twice
on sensational saves by goalie
Maury Sauder, but the latter
actually pushed the equalized
into his own net.
Mark Kirk hit on two
blueline shots in the first three
minutes of the third and Mike
Clark added one on a
powerplay to give the Hawks
their margin of victory.
However, Dearing had to
make four crucial saves in the
final four minutes to preserve
the win. Tavistock pulled
their goalie with two and a
half minutes left and with Ex-
eter playing a man short, but
Dearing kept them at bay.
He finished with 32 saves,
while Sauder had 41.
