Kids beat parents
Successful soccer season ends
Saturday another succesful
season of soccer was closed
off with a bang. Starting at 10
a.m. at the high school four
games were played between
kids and parents. All games
were won by the kids.
There were a lot of com-
plaints about home referees
and about unusual rules, but
it all made for some excellent
fun for kids and parents alike.
Maybe this is the only time of
the year that the kids can
make their dads look bad and
get away with it.
At noon everyone gathered
at the rec centre for a pot -luck
lunch and the award
ceremony. Over 300 kids and
parents enjoyed a delicious
meal, all parents had put
their best foot forward and
there was plenty for
everyone.
The award ceremony
followed. In his opening
remarks, club president
Simon Van Dam touched on
the excellent season the soc-
cer club has enjoyed in 1983.
Over all three league, two
playoff A and two playoff B
championships were won by
the Exeter teams in the
Lucan and District Soccer
Association.
Exeter Mosquito teams also
won a B championship in
Seaforth and an A champion-
ship in Walkerton and an Ex-
eter Squirt team won a B
championship in an Ilderton
tournament.
Van Dam also thanked the
executive, coaches and
referees who made this
season possible. Also men-
tioned were the sponsors of
trophies and sweaters. A
special thank you went to
Pete McFalls who has work-
ed so efficiently and so hard
for the club this season.
After recognizing the
special effort of those kids.
who besides playing on their
regular team also played on
teams in higher age groups
because of player shortages it
was time for a special
surprise.
After he announced that the
soccer club was founded in
1973 which meant that this
year is the 10th anniversary,
a big birthday cake with 10
candles was brought in while
everyone sang Happy
Birthday.
The team awards were then
presented to the champions
by Mr. Van Dam followed by
the individual player awards
SH cross country
runners on sidelines
With only two weeks re-
maining before Huron -Perth
cross country, South Huron
has three of its top four
female runners on the injured
list.
Of the team that was fifth at
OFSAA last year, Colleen
Regier is out of the season
with a broken hip as a result
of a car accident. Sister and
rival Sheila Regier injured
her knet .n the sameaccident
but should be running soon. A
pulled groin muscle has
hindered Catherine Patter -
son's running and field
hockey.
However South Huron has
an abundance of good.
healthy runners as proven in
last Wednesday's Invitational
meet. Over 400 runners
challenged Exeter's deman-
ding course.
South Huron captured the
senior girls championship
with the first four runners in
the top 10. Mary Lou Rundle
showed her strength to place
third. Susan Sullivan, Susan
Birmingham and Esther Van
Oss ran together to plac
eighth, i,inth and tenth
consecutively.
The junior girls were a
close second behind H -P
rivals from St. Marys. First
South Huron runner to finish
was Irene Dietrich in fourth
place. Sheila and Colleen
Regier were fifth and sixth
respectively prior to their un-
fortunate -accident. Sandra
Hullebusch finished 26th.
A disappointing fall by Lin-
dy Dillen pulled Exeter's
midget girls back to a respec-
table third place team finish.
The top midget runner's
sprained ankle should heal
quickly.
Following in her older
sister's quick footsteps
Jeanette VanEsbroeck plac-
ed fifth ahead of South
Huron's other midgets, Barb
Lawson, Kathleen Little and
Paulette Rauthbauer respec-
tively in seventeenth, twenty-
first and thirty-fifth positions.
South Huron's males did not
fare so well as their female
teamineates. Best finished as
a team was fifth for the pro-
mising midgets. Running in
the summer has improved se-
cond year midget Mark
Johnston as his fourteenth
place finish led South Huron's
runners. Also running well
were Steve Harburn (29th).
Craig Winbow (35th), and Les
Boit (50th).
Ina very tough junior field
South Huron held their own in
ninth spot. Jeff Wareham
finished sixteenth ahead of
former Exeter star Ed Thuss
who is now running for
Strathroy. Dan Morley was
next in fifth -third position
followed by Ray Lewis (57)
and Greg O'Tool (61).
Paul Novak and Mike
Clarke were South Huron's
only senior boys and ran well
in sixteenth and 19th place,
res;'ectively.
Six Exeter runners com-
peted at the pre-OFSAA meet
Saturday at the London Ski
Club which hosts both WOSSA
and OFSAA competition.
Running as midgets Mark
Johnston placed 30th, Tim
Teeter 54th, Craig Windbow
56th, Greg O'Toole 63rd, Mur-
ray Rundle, 66th and Les
Bott, 70th. The challenging
course includes a steep ski
hill.
Last night South Huron run-
ners were competing at
Westminster in London and
travel to Dorchester tomor-
row. They will get their hill
training Friday at the
Chicopee Ski Resort in
Kitchener.
for each team presented by

special team award was

team coached by Herman
Walterkens. This award goes
to the team that achieves the
best results of all the teams
within our oganizations.

Hawks lose
The oldtimer hockey season
got underway Monday night
at the Lucan arena when
Lucan edged the Exeter
Molting Hawks 5-4.
Lucan took a 2-1 first period
lead and enlarged the margin
to 5-2 at the end of two periods
of play.
Stan McNiff notched the
first Lucan goal on a three-
way effort with Jack Park
and Gary Revington while
Bill Bannerman converted a
pass from Rick Gwalchmai
for the second score.
The only Exeter goal of the'
first period came from the
pass from Bob Jones.
Bill Darling, Brian Haskett
and Rick Gwalchmai fired the
three second period
unanswered goals for Lucan.
Assisting were Stan McNif,
Bill Darling and Bill
Bannerman.
The third period scores for
the Molting Hawks were fired
by Mike Cushman and Frank
Boyle. Getting assists were
Jack Chipchase, Jim Russell
and Keith Ahrens.
The three stars were Glenn
McFalls and Bill Haskett of
Lucan and Mike Cushman of
the Molting Hawks.

by Pete McFaUs, a member
of the selection committee.
Recipient of the award was
Martin DeBruyn who as past
president, coach and referee
had shown great dedication to
the game of soccer.
In his acceptance speech,
Martin thanked the commit-
tee for selecting him and said
that because of his personal
contacts with the late Scott
Hasselback he could not have
had a greater honour bestow-
ed on him.
In his closing remarks Mr.
Van Dam thanked everyone
for coming and making this
such a fun annual event.
In the past 10 years, from 75

players and five teems in 1973
to 200 players and 19 teams in
1989 has been a very suc-
cessful history of our club.
This would not have been
possible without the dedica-
tion and help from a lot of
people.
The last few years the need
for coaches and executive
members has grown con-
stanUy and we urge those who
