A number of musicians in the group started a band and the Oneida Marching Band, featured at this year's Ciderfest, is carrying on the tradition. "The exact details are lost to history but there's been a band in Oneida for so long, it just wouldn't seem right without one," says Neil Cornelius, of the Dept. of Indian and Northern Affairs in London. The marching band, which includes 35 playing members and a color party of 10 from age six to 65, appear in local parades, mostly in Ontario. For the first time, the band marched in four parades in the Washington D.C. area this year. Though the band includes a lot of young members, one musician is 94 -years -old and plays only when the band has a concert. When he started, he was 8. Since the 1900s there have been two bands on the Oneida reserve. In the 1950s one of those bands was a reserve school band and the brass band appearing at Ciderfest is a result of that band. All of the members of the band are from the Oneida reserve except the instructor, John Newell, his wife and two others, all from Springfield, Ont. To keep the band alive, younger members are actively recruited and taught to play an instrument in a winter training program. Ciderfest WEEK - END SPECIAL '9b aiPiP mow. For the second year, Ciderfest is being organized through the co-operation of the Van Egmond Foundation and the Business Improvement Association (B1A). "Events on "lain St. are emphasized on Saturday. It was a real success last year," says Mrs. Jones. Last year's attendanlce was close to 2,500. Ciderfest saw light on Sunday. October 17. 1976, a creation of the Van Egmond Foundation and has continued to help the foundation in its endeavour to retain the historical landmark built by Constant Van Egmond, son of Anthony Van Egmond, one of the leaders of the 1837 Rebellion. Paul Carroll, foundation chairman, explained that the foundation was formed after the Ontario Heritage Foundation urged local residents to get together in an attempt to restore the old building. A group was formed in 1972 and began looking for ways to raise money for restoration and maintenance. As a result Ciderfest was born and has become the major fund raiser for the foundation. • Despite snow and poor weather conditions during the first Ciderfest, organizers managed to raise approximately PAGE 7 $1000 and since then they have never looked back. With a combination of traditional apple cider. old fashioned craft demonstrations. cultural exhibits and displays. Cider*st proved to be an outstanding success. In following years. Ciderfest has been expanded to help cope with growing attendance. Exhibits and displays grew and the foundation was forced to use other facilities. Tents were set-up on the Van Egmond house grounds and the Seaforth Public School was us' d over the years to house the expanding activities Ciderfest has attracted. In 1979 the foundation expanded its publicity campaign through advertisements in weekly newspapers and radio. The move proved to be successful with the organizers registering a 33 to 40 per cent increase in attendance over the previous year. Ciderfest '83 should benefit from last year's increased publicity campaign with higher attendance. A shunpikes tour from London brought about 3,000 people to the Van Egmond House in the spring and many of those' people expressed an interest in attending Ciderfest, she said. "We had a lot more traffic through the Van Egmond house this year; the numbers through the house tripled from last year." Funds raised at Ciderfest go towards the operating funds of the house for the following year, One of the goals of the foundation is to finish the inside of the newly constructed Carriage House. The Van Egmond House is used throughout the year for heritage digs and tours, theatre and concert productions, recreation, special events, art displays, educational classes and a general meeting place for community groups. Expanded last year to offer the most displays, exhibits, demonstrations and concerts in its history, Ciderfest '83 will continue with the same number of exhibits as last year.
