HS football starts
South Huron's junior foot-
ball steam rolled its way to a
34-0 victory over Stratford
Northwestern's Huskies last
Thursday in their first
regular season game. Condi-
tions for the game were not
the best and the teams ex-
perienced both rain and hail.
Despite the wet field, Coach
Dave Cox said the team
played fairly well. He was
surprised with the team's
defence commenting that
they looked quite good. The
finess of the team's offence is
what made the game
however.
Cox says the team does not
work for a power -based of-
fence, but rather one of speed
with quick hits and good
blocking. This was
demonstrated by the comple-
tion of four of the seven
passes made in the game.
Bill Fisher played strongly,
scoring two touchdowns and
rushing close to 250 yards.
Scott Miller added two as well
and passed to Ted Lawson
who addd a fifth.Brian Topp
kicked two converts and Sean
Whiteford completed a pass
from Scott Miller for a two
point conversion.

Field hockey tournament
The annual red and black
field hockey tournament was
held Saturday with the host
Panthers capturing first
place. South Huron began the
day with a scoreless tie
against St. Marys.
In a strong showing, they
defeated Parkhill 5-0 with
Pauline Brand scoring three
goals backed up with one each
from Julie Russell Ind Ken-
dra Arthur.
Next, Medway was shutout
in a 2-0 Panther victory. Both
goals were scored by Pauline
Brand. The final match
resulted in another South
Huron wir, Strathroy being
defeated 2-0 with goals scored
by Ronalyn Bell and Pauline
Brand. This insured the Pan-
thers.first place in the tourna-
ment with Medway coming in
as runners up.
lack of experience noting that
the team had a shabby start
and seemed to improve a bit
towards the end of the game.
He says blocking is poor at
the moment preventing the
team from concentrating on a
passing offence.
Thursday, they had one
pass intercepted by Stratford
resulting in a Stratford
touchdown. However, Nor-
thwestern had troubles of its
own fumbling a punt return.
Ahmed Osmand recovered
the ball and ran for a
touchdown.
In the second half, the game
seemed to rock back and forth
across the field. The South
Huron defence was in good
shape and prevented the
Huskies from scoring until the
last seconds of the game when
Stratford scored a 20 yard
field goal. Scott Turnbull
almost got his hands on the
ball but just skimmed it and
was not able to prevent it
from making it through the
uprights.
Both teams play on Thurs-
day, the juniors against
Wingha'm and the seniors
against Clinton.
