Friday, the new Ailsa Craig
Post Office was officially
opened with a ribbon -cutting
ceremony. Activities include
the presentation of a tribute
from Canada Post president
R. Michael Warren to
postmaster Ruth Willis and
an open house.
The new Ailsa Craig Post
Office was built at a cost of
$106,000 by Gregus Construc-
tion Ltd. of Exeter, who was
awarded the contract in
February. The 117.1 square
metre (1,261 sq. It.) structure
was ready for occupancy on
July 31 and the staff was mov-
ed in and open for buiness on
August 2.
The village's first post of-
fice was established in 1861
with Thomas Atkinson as
Ailsa Craig's first
postmaster. Since then, the
post office has grown into and
out of several buidings, and a
dozen men and women have
served as postmaster, in-
cluding Mrs. Willis, who was
appointed in July, 1982.
