If you are in- terested in looking at conser- vation tillage practice on your farm, whether it be chisel plowing, ridging or no -till, now is the time to start planning' When selecting a field for conservation tillage you should consider the following: 1. Select one of your best fields, don't relegate a conser- vation tillage system to your worst field. Avoid swampy areas, badly trampled pastures and areas of heavy infestations of perennial weeds. 2 Good drainage. 3. Soil type. 4. Fertility levels. The Huron Soil and Water Conservation District can provide you with technical in- formation and assistance as well as some conservation tillage equipment. Why not give us a call? The District will have a No - till Drill (tltassey-Ferguson 12') for a limited time this fall. If you are interested in .no -tilling either winter canola or winter wheat, please con- tact us as soon as possible so final arrangements can be made. • - Carol 'Thompson Conservation Agronomist (519) 482-3428 Substitutes for corn in swine rations Feed companies have been least costing their rations for years and it's time for in- dividual farms to start using the same technology. Corn can be replaced quite readily for hogs with barley. wheat, wheat shorts or triticale. Even though you may not be getting maximum growth on your pigs, it may still be more economical to substitute these other grains. I called Dr. Les Young at the University of Guelph to give me more exact replacement values. Agents For • Ontario Bean Producers Marketing Board We Are Capable 01 11 I \WM, I 01 7? R R 1, Aliso Craig Ontario, Canada NOM MO Dr. Young said, "Barley can replace 100 percent of the corn in your ration and it is worth 90 percent the value of corn." Therefore, if corn is priced at $175 per tonne, the feeding value of barley relative to corn is $157 per tonne. Which means if barley is priced under $157 per tonne. it is more economical to feed barley than corn considering the pigs will grow a little slower and utilize more feed. Dr. Young also said that "triticale can replace corn pound for pound, but do not adjust for the protein in triticale. Wheat can also replace corn, but in the case of wheat, the protein is better, therefore adjust for protein )approximate protein is 115 percent). Wheat shorts can supply about 75-80 percent of the energy source from corn. The protein from wheat shorts can supply all the pro- tein for sows. Rye has a good energy source, but we do not have a good handle on its palatable problems. Rye re- quires good blending facilities and it's the only feed that should be limited to approx- imately one-third of the grain }'lett•(' turn to page 22 urge immediate passage of a private member's bill to amend the Farmers' Creditors Arrangement Act. Bill C-653, introduced by Ralph Ferguson, (.L - Lambton-Middlesex), pro- vides for a judicial forum on liquidation of assets between financially distressed farmers and creditors. The bill is scheduled to come before Parliament Sept. 21. A last -gasp lobbying effort will be made on Sept. 20. The decision to mount a lob- by was made Wedn, :day at a meeting in Toronto called by the Canadian Farmers' Sur- vival Association. It was at- tended by representatives of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, National Farmers' Union. Christian Farmers' Federation of On- tario, Concerned Farm Women and Women for the Survival of Agriculture. Joining the coalition in the lobbying effort will be the On- tario Federation of Labor and the Canadian Labor Congress. The meeting Wednesday was the second one held by Ontario farm groups to con- sider joint action on the farm financial crisis. The first was called by directors of the 26,000 -member federation of agriculture, the province's largest single general farm group. Tom Shoebottom of Den- field, vice-president of ac- tivist Canadian Farmers' Survival Association, said the groups still have their dif- ferences but all have agreed to support the action on Bill C-653, which was initiated by his group, as well as a key OFA proposal for the issuing of low-interest agriculture bonds, and better pricing mechanisms for farm pro- ducts which most of the clean. "Besides the united front of farm groups, 1 think it's im- portant we have the support of labor as well," said Shoebottom. "We hope that when it gets down to the crunch rural people will sup- port the political party that's going to do the most for farmers." Although the farm -labor coalition move started in On- tario, Shoebottom said that, because of the national makeup of his group and others such as the National Farmers' Union, Women for the Survival of Agriculture and the Canadian Labor Con- gress, lobbyists next week will come from both the West CO.OP r and the East.
