After eight years as talent scout and booking agent for the Festival, Alma Westlake has become an expert at hir- ing acts to appeal to the whole family, from three-year-old toddler to octogenarian great-grandparent. This year is no exception. The opening act, on a stage on the siie of the former antique shop in the centre of the village's business section, will be a one-hour puppet show called Kids on the Block' beginning at 11:30 a.m. Pup- peteers Rachel Racicot and Cheryl Milnen from the Lon- don PUC will manipulate six appealing puppets, each 30 in - Cake, Candy, Baking Supplies Buy or Rent Wilton Cake Pans or Candy Molds Hwy. 84 Between Hensall & Zurich 236-4979 •••••••••r ches high, that wear size two in children's clothing. The troupe was conceived in 1981, the year of the disabl- ed, and funded by Wintario and the ministry of culture and tourism. The show has since performed across On- tario, in schools, for ministers' conferences, and for special occasions like the annual meeting of the South Huron and District Association for the Mentally Retarded in Ex- eter last year, where it was the highlight of the evening. Puppeteer Rachel Racicot explained that some of the puppets are disabled - Rene is blind, Ellen Jane is mentally handicapped - but all are very witty. After each skit, the children in the audience are invited to ask the puppets questions. One purpose of the show is to create an awareness and acceptance of the fact some children do things a bit dif- ferently than others. Zurich's own Mozart's Melody Makers will till the next half-hour with their special brand of country music, and will be on stage again later in the day. "We couldn't get along without them. They are good, and reliable". Alrna comm. Atm. Bean Festival c mmittee chairman Rick Fisher and Zurich Reeve Don Van Patter will declare the festival of- ficially open at one p.m., then turn the mike over to popular '1'V personality Ross Daily, this year's entertainment pro- gram master of ceremonies. They proved to be crowd-pleasers at the Calgary Stampede, the CNE and the Kirkton garden party. The trick riders comprising the BMX bicycle team from London will appeal especial ly to the teenagers as they show what they can do in a roped -off section of the main street pavement. Ar.dy Immanse, general manager of General Coach in Ilensall, will provide one of his company's recreational vehicles to be used as a dress - Ing room for the entertainers. Taleski Sound in London • will again be responsible for the sound system. All performances will be repeated, with the exception of the puppet show, which will be seen only from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30.
