Crowd disappointing at resort,
but castle builders certainly not
Dashwood teacher -artist,
Ruth Ann Merner, coached a
team of four of her students to
win the Fraleigh trophy and
top money at Grand Bend's
Ontario Open Sandcastle
competition over the
weekend.
The team won $500 Satur-
day for the best sand
sculpture - a larger -than life
mermaid. On Sunday they
competed ith Saturday's six
top teams for the trophy and
an additional prize of $500.
A parade. a length -and -a -
half of the main street with 56
entrants began the festivities
Saturday morning. Prize
money amounting to $650 was
awarded to the best eight
entrants.
The contest was officially
'opened by Mrs. Ella Meltroy
and Reeve Bob Sharen. Local
singer Don Baldwin sang 0
Canada.
Saturday's sandcastle
building began at 1:30 p.m.
The 17 teams entered were
assigned about 25 square
metres of roped -off space
each on the north beach. With
the wind from the lake Satur-
day, teams spent as much
time keeping their structures

Results were announced by
judges at 4:30 p.m. The Col-
onials, last year's champion
castle builders, were judged
builders of the most authentic
castle and winners of the first
$500. Members of the team
were Cam Anderson, Jim
.Breen, Jim Jean and Tony
Vermeulen.
The $500 prize for the most
imaginative castle went to the •
Sanders Restaurant team.
Team mates were Ellen
Visser, Carol Bridle, Jill Reed
and Marty Withenshaw.
On the Merner team, win-
ners for the best sand
sculpture Saturday, were
Greg Forrest, Simon Chow,
Jeff Kennett, Jesse Forrest
and coach Merner. '
Three runners-up in Satur-
day's competition were a
team from Midland Michigan
organized by Clayton Hoorn-
stra, who sculptured a female
figure on a dolphin; Bob
Bergmann's team with their
large likeness of ET and John
Brock Architects for the cas-
tle structures. Each won $100.
All six teams were to compete
in the final event Sunday.
Five teams competed, - the
Bergmann team having two
members absent Sunday.
The winning Merner piece
depicted Neptune,king of the
seas on his chariot of shells,
flanked by a sea monster.
While Chamber of Com-
merce members were disap-
pointed with the number of
persons visiting the event
Saturday, about a thousand
were added to the crowd Sun-
day in spite of the fact that the
warnings of pollution remain-
ed on the beach.
Most of Saturday's extra
events were cancelled
because of high winds. On
Sunday, however the lake was
calm and there was a parade
of power and sailing craft -hi"'
the lake conducted' by
members of Grand Bend
Yacht and Cruising Clubs.
Bob Wright and a team of
Sports Parachutists
demonstrated sky diving on
the north beach.
Winner of the Lions 50-50
draw, announced Saturday, a

Grand Bend. His prize was

Lioness quarter of beef and
side of pork was made Sun-
day. Gene Grenier won the
beef and Diane Bexton won
the pork.

float, Busy Bee Day Camp
BUSY BEES Winning children's float at Saturday's Sandcastle parade in Grand
Bend was created by the leaders and children of Grand Bend's Busy Bee Day Camp.
They set oside lost week as Sandcastle week at the Eilber Street Parkette.

the best business exhibit were
Birch Bark Trailer Park and
the Colonial Gables.
Parade judges were Jean
Gibson, Jean Clapperton and
Tom Kneale. Gene Grenier
was parade organizer.
David Bannister headed the
team of judges for sandcastle
judging. With him were Sid
Fletcher, Jean Gibson, Lee
Thomas, David Brown, Dawn
Crabe, " Marilyn Martins,
Gord Lambert, Wendy
Whiting and Nicky
Lampman.
RUNNER UP — The castle building team of John Brock, Architects placed in the running for the final building
competition Sunday after their Saturday's effort was judged among the three runners-up in the first day's trial.
