Canadian motocross champ breaks tough minute, 40 second barrier at Hully Gully
Sunday and Monday of the
Civic Holiday weekend, Hul-
ly Gully was host to riders
from all over Canada. Most
riders coming to the races
came from Ontario, but also
present were riders from as
far away as British Columbia.
The high point of the
weekend's action was the ap-
pearance Monday of Ross
Pederson, National Suzuki
team rider and current
number on plate holder in
motocross.
For the uninitiated, the
coveted number one plate
goes to the best rider in the
country. Pederson, of
Medicine Hat, Alberta, is the
current Canadian Expert
Champion, and came to Hul-
ly Gully's races this weekend
straight from a fifth place
overall finish at the U.S.
Grand Prix in Unadilla, New
York the day before.
The previous weekend,
Pederson finished third
overall in the World 250
Grand Prix at St. Gabriel,
Quebec. That's the highest
place finish ever for a Cana-
dian in the World's Grand
Prix of Motocross, Pederson's
presence at a non -
championship race indicates
the level of importance
motocross is gaining - and
underscores the level of the
track.
Heavy rains made the track
very muddy, Sunday. That
made the races a treat for the
spectators, but made things
perhaps a little more in-
teresting than some of the
lower ranked riders cared for.
Rain again during the night
threatened Monday's races,
but track officials managed to
drain the track sufficiently so
that it was actually in better
condition than the day before.
In fact, some of the best lap -
times were turned in on Mon-
day. Ross Pederson managed
to break the tough one
minute -40 second lap time
barrier with several 1:38's.
Some very respectable
times were turned in by many
others as well. Varna area ex-
pert rider Chuck Collins
finished second overall to
Pederson in 250 and Open
classes, and numerous other
riders were close behind. Con-
sidering Pederson's World
class standings, it shows what
a long way motocross, par-
ticularly motocross in On-
tario. and in Midwestern On-
• tario, has come. Spectators
were treated to some of the
best motocross action since
the Canadian Senior National
Championship was held at
Hully Gully on July 9th and
10th.
In fact, many of the riders
who were at the champion-
ship were back for the Civic
Holiday races. Stephen
Juvenile girls
have good season
The Exeter juvenile girls
fastball team has completed
the regular schedule with a
record of 10 victories and two
defeats and is ready for the
playoffs which are expected
to start within a week.
The only two losses during
the season were 12-11 to Cor-
bett and 17-11 against
Crediton.
The victories were 16-15,
20-0 and 16-12 over Lieury;
24-9 and 26-5 over Crediton;
9-0 and 13-8 over Corbett and
17-1. 10-5 and 7-5 over Ailsa
Craig.
The team is coached by
Becky Baker and Brenda
Pinder and the players are
Brenda MacDonald, Brenda
Waldeck, Lisa Rundle, Cyndi
Down, Barb Down, Jane
Sims, Dana Bozzato, Starr
Jesney, Leslie Hunter-Duvar,
Sharon Skinner, Alice
Diettich, Irene Dietrich,
Janet Kints, Joanne Miller,
Catherine Patterson, Sue
Gregus, Brenda Bell, Faye
Gaiser, Kelly Livingstone and
Maja Gans.
.,.
Luyks, of Dorchester, current
125 Senior Nation Champion
was also there to race, and in
the combined Senior/Expert
program led several motos -
even the ones Ross Pederson
was in. In fact, Luyks' perfor-
mance was once again
flawless, as it was in the
Nationals.
The electricity generated
by the calibre of riders at this
two day event seemed to take
over all the riders present.
Jimmie Dickens of Hensall, in
the School Boy classes shone
in the races and took home
some gold on Sunday for the
first time. Even in the school
boy races, some truly astoun-
ding lap times were being
turned in, despite the less
than ideal conditions.
Other National class riders
present were Tim Ming of
London, Winston Byblow, 1982
Junior Champion, Jim
Kuches, Jim Brooks, and
others from the Nationals'
riders' list.
