Lucan Fair continues tradition of
The Lucan Fair has a pro-
ud tradition of bringing the
best in country entertrain-
ment to southwestern On-
tario. This year is no
exception.
Friday, August 12 at 7 p.m.
and 9 p.m.. the legendary Son-
ny James and his band, the
Southern Gentlemen, will be
added to the impressive list of
stars to appear over the
years.
Though best remembered
for his early hits like "Young
Love" and "Running Bear",
Sonny James has fashioned a
long and distinguished career
that has placed him among
country's elite and given him
seven years of consecutive
number one records.
He has been honoured on
numerous occasions by
various country music
publications and organiza-
tions, including the title Male
Artist of the Decade by
Record World, and is always
in demand for live and televi-
sion performances.
As well as earning ac-
colades for his artistry as a
performer, Sonny is renown-
ed in his profession as a
songwriter and a record
producer.
His tune "Little Bit South of
Saskatoon" became the
theme for the movie Slap
Shot. And his career as a pro-
ducer was launched with
Marie Osmond's million -
seller "Paper Roses".
A couple of years ago, Lon-
don's Marie Bottrell was bill-
ed at the Lucan Fair as "'1'o
day's Star, tomorrow's
Superstar". She took the
stage and simply enchanted

the audience with an un-
forgettable performance,
more than living up to
everyone's expectations.
It's now 1983. And tomor-
row has arrived for Marie
Bottrell. With a series of
music industry awards and
recording successes behind
her, she is now entering the
superstar ranks of Canadian
music. On Saturday, August
13 at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., you'll
be able to see and hear why.
Since Marie wowed the
crowd at the 1981 Lucan Fair,
she's been concentrating on
her live performances with
extensive touring on her own
or as a warm-up act for the
likes of Marty Robbins.
She's also been back in the
recording studio working on
the distinctive sound many
predict will take her right to
the top.
The results of her efforts
are now paying off.
Reviewers are calling her
new album, entitled "A Night
Like This", a "masterpiece",
one of those "one in a thou-
sand albums", a work to be
weighed "against anything
that's been put on vinyl this
year by the top ladies of
Nashville."
And when its songs and all
the others from Marie's
repertoire are performed
live, there's now an extra
special quality about them.
Some people have said she
doesn't just sing a song, she
feels it and has now matured
into one of music's top
vocalists.
That was borne out by
Marie's recent selection as
the Canadian Radio Music
Directors' number one
female vocalist. That's quite
an honour for someone bare-
ly into her twenties. And an
indication of the stardom that
gets a little closer to her every
day.
What all the rave reviews
add up to is an outstanding
night of entertainment for
everyone Marie Bottrell is
quite simply a performer who
should not be missed by
anyone who has a love of
country music done the way
it should be.
Join Marie at this year's
Lucan Fair. Join the party.
And catch a rising star.
Since their rather spec-
tacular arrival on the rock
music scene in the mid -70's,
Rough Trade has been earn-
ing international critical ac-
claim for their unique
aproach to rock 'n' roll and
more than their share of at-
tention for some very enter-
taining contributions to. and
comments on, contemporary
culture - for, as their latest
album title suggests, Shaking
the Foundations.
On August 13 at 2 p.m.
Rough Trade will be in con-
cert at the Lucan Fair. And
the old town may never be
quite the same.
It's very difficult to put any
kind of label on Rough Trade.
They are outrageous and
sometimes shocking masters
of extrrvagance. But always
the consummate musicians,
delivering a mixture of
rhythm and blues, new wave
and futuristic electropop in a
stunning visual package.
'l'he look and sound of
Rough 'Trade is a product of .
two vivid and extraordinary
imaginations - the ones
belonging to vocalist Carole
Pope and guitarist, keyboar-
disl, - composer Kevan
Staples.
Backed by John Andersen
on drums, Howard Ayee on
bass and David McFlorrow on
keyboards, they explore con-
sumerism, fascism, politics
and a long list of other sub-
jects in what has been called
a "mirthful hocking" style.
