teams are ready
Sunday, August 7 will be
Ball Day in McGillivray
township when all 17 teams
participating in the township
this summer will see action.
Both diamonds at the
Lieury ball park will be busy
for the early part of the day
as every McGillivray player,
regardless of age gets a
chance to strut his or her
stuff.
Action starts rolling at 10
a.m. when the Lieury bantam
boys will be involved on dia-
mond one and T -ball par-
ticipants will be busy on the
other.
At 11:30 a.m. it will be the
Lieury and Corbett juvenile
girls and at the same time the
Lieury and Brinsley squirts
will be battling.
The Lieury bantam girls
will take on the Lieury Old
Gals at 1 p.m. while Lieury
and Brinsley are meeting in
pee wee competition.
At 2:30 p.m. it will be slo-
pitch with the McGillivray
men meeting the Lieury Old
Timers. Slo-pitch continues at
4 p.ni. with the Brinsley and
McGillivray ladies squaring
off.
The next two games will be
for juvenile boys with
Brinsley and Corbett tangling
at 5:30 p.m. and Lieury and
the Lieury Red Sox facing
each other at 7 p.m.
The big 11•game day con-
cludes with senior fastball ac-
tion at 9 p.m. with the
Strathroy Jets of the
Memorial fastball league tak-
ing on an all-star team of the
best of Lieury, the Lienry Jets
and West Corners.

Local swim team wins
one meet, second in another
Exeter has done very well
at their first two swim meets
of the summer. They will par-
ticipate in four meets
throughout the summer, the
last one being the finals in
Mitchell on August 20.
Saturday, July 15 Exeter
travelled to Goderich to com-
pete in their first Intercounty
swim meet. Goderich, Clin-
ton, Seaforth and Exeter were
present for the meet.
Goderich finished first with
289 points while Exeter was
close behind with 260 points.
Clinton was slightly behind
Exeter with 239 points and
Seaforth finished last with 120
points.
The Exeter team did ex-
tremely well considering all
35 members were not present.
In Goderich, in the girls and
boys eight and under division,
Chad Huchison, received two
thirds, a fourth and a fifth,
Jeremy Brock did well winn-
ing three seconds and a third
place ribbon.
In the girls division, Shonyn
Baynham won a second,
fourth and fifth. Suzanne
Steciuk brought in a fifth
Deer hunt
approved
Applications for participa-
tion in the controlled deer
hunt in Huron County and
Minto Township of Wellington
County are now available at
the Wingham District office of
the Ministry of Natural
Resources.
The four day shotgun and
muzzleloader season will be
held from November 7 -
November 10, 1983. Successful
applicants are entitled to hunt
antlered or antlerless deer.
Farmers and landowners of
50 acres or more are eligible
to participate. Their applica-
tions should be submitted by
October 28, 1983. Other On-
tario residents must enter
their name in a lottery -type
draw for a limited number of
validation tags. A total of 720
tags will be available for Unit
85; 220 in sub -unit 85A, 300 in
85B and 200 in 85C. The ap-
plication deadline for this
draw is August 31.
Deer hunts with controlled
hunter numbers have been
staged in Huron County since
1980. A total of 985 hunters
received tags for the 1982
season and were successful in
taking 131 deer.

Exeter did well in the nine
and 10 age category. Fred
Steciuk won four firsts, Jim-
my Ahrens received two
seconds and a fourth place
ribbon.
In girls nine and 10, Julia
Merner, Michelle Birm-
ingham, Bryden Gryseels,
Becky Morgan and Giselle
Charrette brought in 48 points
for the Exeter team.
The 11 and 12 age category
is the largest group that
brought in many points. In the
boys category, Jay Davison,
Dave Dalrymple and David
O'Connor did very well,
bringing in two seconds and
three thirds. The 11 and 12
girls brought in 50 points.
In 13 and 14 Rob and Dave
Russell, Dennis Murray and
Jeff Hannah gathered many
points for the Exeter team.
Karen Hoffman had a good
day for the Exeter team as
well.
The whole team did ex-
tremely well and the Exeter
coaches -were very pleased
with the second place finish.
Exeter did even better at
their home meet July 23. The
team had a first place finish,
with 419 points. Clinton had
400 points, Kirkton 234 points
and Huron Park had 81 points.
We had almost the entire
team swimming and
everyone did well. In the eight
and under category, Jeremy
Brock had two firsts and se-
cond and a third. Peter
Gryseels and Chad Huchison
also did well.
In the nine and 10 boys divi-
sion Fred Steciuk had two
firsts and a second. Jimmy
Ahrens had three thirds, and
Troy Robinson had two
seconds, a third and a fifth.
In the girls nine and 10
category, Julia Merner,
Bryden Gryseels, Michelle
Birmingham, Christine
Walker, Giselle Charrette,
and Becky Morgan all did
very well and brought in
many of Exeter points.
The 11 and 12 boys and girls
had a very good day as well.
They brought in many rib-
bons and helped insure Ex-
eter's first place finish. Good
performances were shown by
Steven Lingard, Jay Davison,
Dave Dalrymple, Spring
Cushman, Lynette Gryseels,
and Marcie and Michelle
Ellison.
Rob Russell and Dave
Russell also had many rib-
bons for the Exeter team in
the thirteen and fourteen age
division.
A special thank you is also
extended to all the bronze
students who helped make
Exeter the winning team and
to the parents who helped
with the swim meet.
Exeter has a strong swim
team and they should do very
well in the next two weeks,
especially at the finals in
Mitchell.
Job creation grant
Agriculture Minister
Eugene Whelan and Ontario
Minister of Natural
Resources Alan Pope an-
nounced today that the
Ausable-Bayfield Conserva-
tion Authority will receive
$107,787 for a job creation pro-
ject in the Wingham District.
In making the announce-
ment on behalf of Employ-
ment and Immigration
Minister Lloyd Axworthy.
Mr. Whelan said, "the project
will provide a total of 241
weeks of work for 15 area
unemployment insurance
claimants."
"This job creation project is
scheduled to last for a period
of 20 weeks", Mr. Pope said.
Participants will remove
slash and logging debris to
facilitate proper manage-
ment of water levels and
habitate. This debris will be
piled and then covered with
earth to create waterfowl
nesting islands."
Section 38 of the Unemploy-
ment Insurance Act provides
for the use of U1 funds to sup-
port activities that allow UI
claimants to use their skills
while they are unemployed.
The Canada Employment
and Immigration Commis-
sionwill pay each worker up
to $240 a week from UI funds,
while money provided by the
Ministry of Natural
Resources will top up wages
by 560 a week for each job the
project creates.
The Natural Resources
Ministry will also cover ad-
ministration and benefit
costs. The two departments
will contribute $57,840 and
849.947 respectively to the
project.

Royals record even split
The Exeter Royals gained
an even break this week in
Southwestern Fastball league
action. They dropped a 6-2
decision to Poplar Hill and
came bouncing back to double
the score 12-6 over Ilderton-
The Royu;s are sponsoring
their second annual in-
termediate fastball tourna-
ment this weekend at Exeter
Community Park. It begins at
7:30 p.m. Friday night and
will include some top notch
teams. Admission is free for
the three day event.
Some of the pre -tournament
favourites include the defen-
ding champion Lucan Iri sh,
London Berkshire with
former Memorial league pit-
cher Ian Henderson, Doug
Kennedy's young Stonetown
chargers from St. Marys,
Stratford Samsonites with pit-
cher Rick Trachel on their
roster and the hard hitting
Walton club also featuring pit-
chers Rick McDonald and
Gus Feeney.
In the Royals toss this week
Poplar Hill scored three runs
in the sixth inning to break up
a close game and send the
Royals home in defeat.
Poplar Hill scored.a run in
the second inning but the
Royals knotted the count in
the third as Brian Hodgins
tripled and Mike Desjardine
singled him home.
Poplar Hill went up 3-1 in
the fourth and 6-1 in the sixth.
The final Royal run scored as
Jeff Lindenfield tripled and
scored on Gary Skinner's
single.
Walt Waun picked up the
win for Poplar Hill with relief
help from Jim Daniels. They
gave up seven hits while strik-
ing out six batters.
Brad Marsden took the hs"
with Dave Prout pitching in
relief. They combined to
allow 11 hits while striking out
five batters.
Royals 12 Ilderton 6
Paul "Satoh" McKnight
was the star Thursday as the
Royals took a 6-1 lead, lost it
and then scored six more
runs.
McKnight had a three run
homer and a two run homer to
knock in five runs.
The Royals opened the
scoring in the first inning as
Doug Pearson and Mike Des-
jardine walked, Gary Skinner
singled and Barry Baynham's
grounder produced two runs.
Ilderton scored a single run
in the second that was match-
ed by the Royals as Al Lovell
and Dave Prout singled.
They went up 6-1 in the third
as Gary Skinner reached on
an error, Barry Baynham
singled and Paul McKnight
homered.
Ilderton exploded for five
runs in the top of the fourth to
tie the game at 6-6.
The Royals went up 9-6 in
the fifth as Barry Baynham
singled, Paul McKnight
homered, Phil Turner singled
and Brian Hodgins doubled.
They added their final three
runs in the sixth as Mike Des-
jardine tripled, Gary Skinner
tripled, and Barry Baynham
singled.
Edginton and Morrison toil-
ed for Ilderton allowing 14 hits
while striking out one batter.
