Tops in hockey
The August issue of Hockey News on area newstands
has an interesting feature listing the 10 best in the Na-
tional Hockey League in a wide variety of categories.
To no one's surprise the 150 people taking part in the
survey picked Wayne Gretsky as the best player now,
but, only fourth in the list of best players ever.
Gretzky was placed behind Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr
and Jean Belliveau. Next to Gretzky to finish off the top
10 of all time were Bobby Hully, Maurice Richard, Doug
Harvey, Phil Esposito, Stan Mikita and Guy Lafleur.
Surprisingly most of the selectors seemed to. have
very short memories and didn't go back to the early
days of hockey for fellows like Howie Morenz, Newsy
Lalonde, Cyclone Taylor, Johnny Gagnon, Charlie and
Lionel Conacher, the Kraut line, George Hainsworth,
Black Jack Stewart, Arel Joliat, Frank Boucher, to
name only a few.
Back in 1950 Howie Morenz was named the greatest
hockey player of the first half of this century, yet his
heroics were not recognized in this poll.
The only player from the good old days to make the
survey was Eddie Shore as the fourth best defenceman
ever behind Bobby Orr, Doug Harvey and Tim Horton.
Next came Dennis Potvin, Larry Robinson, Pierre
Pilotte, Harry Howell and sBrad Park.
In the best goalies ever department, the selections
were Terry. Sawchuk, Glen Hall, Bernie Parent, Ken
Dryden, Jacques Plante, Johnny Bower, Tony Esposito,
Gerry Cheevers, Bill Durnan and Turk Broda. •
Gordie Bowe also led in another section that of best
forward every and was fourth in ranking as the best
fighter ever.
In the best player now category, Gretzky is followed
by Mike Bossy, Denis Savard, Peter Stastny, Bryan
Trottier, Raymond Burque, Marcel Dionne, Rod
Langway, Rick Middleton, Bobby Clarke, Denis Potvin
and Lanny McDonald.
Following Gordie Howe as the best forwards ever
were Jean Beliveau, Wayne Gretzky, Bobby llully,
Maruice Richard, Phil Esposito, Stan Mikita. Guy
Lafleur, Marcel Dionne and Mike Bossy.
The best fighters were listed as John Ferguson,
Orland Kurtenbach, Gordie Howe, Clarke, Gillies, Ted
Lindsay, Bob Kelly, Al Secord, Reggie Fleming, Bryan
Watson and Terry O'Reilly.
Glenn Anderson was chosen as the fastest player.
Next Came Mark Mesiser, Mark Howe, Michel Goulet,
Bob Bourne, Ken Linseman, Denis Savard, Mike Gart-
ner, Paul Coffey, Peter Marsh and Paul Woods while
the slowest were Brad Marsh, Brad Park, Paul Higgins,
Jim Benning, Frank Bathe, Bill Hap, Paul Gardner,
Charlie Simmer. Nick Fotiu, Tiger Williams and Glen
Cochrane.
The best faceoff men now were Bobby Clarke, Bryan
Trottier, Doug Jarvis, Tom Lysiak, Barry Pederson,
Darryl Sittler, Marcel Dionne, Ronnie Francis, Gil Per-
reault and Brent Peterson.
Reed Larsen was listed as having the hardest shot
followed by Doug Wilson, Denis Potvin. Rick Valve,
Lanny McDonald, Barry Beck, Paul Coffey, Guy
Lafleur, Al Secord, Brad Maxwell and Brad Palmer.

Beat juniors 9-4
Express win two Great Lakes games
The Exeter Express could
only win two of four Great
Lakes senior baseball league
games this week and their
charge for the second and
final playoff spot in the nor-
thern division was slowed.
The Express were bombed
19-6 by Kincardine Wednes-
day night, Thursday they
downed the Exeter Co-op
juniors 9-4, Sunday they edg-
ed Kincardine 3-2 and Mon-
day dropped a 10-6 decision to
London Servicemaster.
The regular schedule ended
last night, Wednesday when
the Express travelled to
Byron.
In Kincardine Wednesday
they scored all six runs in the
top of the seventh inning after
the home team had moved in
front 19-0 in the first six
innings.
Dave Hunt homered and
Dave Bogart doubled for the
Express in their big rally in
the seventh to go with singles
from the bats of Dave Par-
sons, Gary Hartman and
Randy Kraul.
Other Express hits earlier
in the game were a pair of
singles by Dave Bogart and
similar hits from Dave At-
thill, Kevin Hern, Dave Hunt
and Jim Pfaff.
Jim Pfaff was the starting
pitcher for Exeter. He was
relieved by Dave Parsons in
the fifth innning.
A six run outburst in the
fourth inning powered the Ex-
press to Thursday's 9-4. win
over the local juniors.
The first run for the Ex-
press came in the opening in-
ning when Dave Parsons
walked, stole second and rac-
ed home . on Dave Hunt's
double.
The score rose to 3-0 in the
second frame as Doug Fair-
bairn, Randy Kraul and Dave
Parsons singled.
The juniors hit the
scoreboard for the first time
in the third inning when Dave
Hayter was safe on an error.
Hayter moved•to third as Joe
Becker was safe on another
miscue and scored on Jeff
McKellar's sacrifice fly to left
field.
Five base hits and a pair of
walks allowed the Express to
score six times in the fourth.
Veteran Scott Burton was
the key to the game winning
rally with two singles in the
same inning. Also con-
tributing hits were Dave At-
thill with a double and singles
from Dave Parsons and Ran-
dy Kraul.
The final three rubs for the
juniors came in the fifth as
Dwayne Laporte, Paul
Gilmour, Steve Neil and Dave
Prout.
The only other junior hit off
southpaw Jim Guenther was
a first inning single by Dave
Shaw. Guenther retired the
side in order in four of the
seven innings.
Brian Horner and Dave
Shaw shared pitching duties
for the juniors.
In Sunday's 3-2 win over
Kincardine, the Express hero
was coachJackChipchase who
was pressed into active ser-
vice. Chipchase singled and
scored the winning run in the
bottom of the sixth inning and
was instrumental in starting
a double play which killed a
promising Kincardine rally in
the first half of the same
inning.
The first Express run came
in the first inning as leadoff
batter Dave Parsons singled,
moved to second on a
sacrifice by Brian Mercer
and home as Kevin Hern was
safe on an error.
Run number two for the Ex-
press came in the third as
Dave Hunt was safe on an er-
ror and completed the bases on
a double by Doug Fairbairn
and single by Dave Atthill.
Dave Hunt was the starting
and winning pitcher for the
Express. He allowed two runs
on only five hits over the
seven inning route and retired
the opposition in order in the
seventh to get the win.
Seven runs in the ninth inn-
ing allowed London Ser-
vicemaster to roar back and
win Monday's game by a
score of 10-6.
Dave Hunt and Brian
Mercer scored the first two
Express markers in the
fourth inning. Three more
local runs crossed the plate in
the eighth as Randy Kraut
and Dave Hunt doubled and
Brian Mercer and Dave
Bogart contributed singles.
In the Exeter ninth Glenn
Thurman walked, moved to
second on a Dave Hunt single
and home on similar hurler.
He was relieved by Jim Guen-
ther in the sixth.

SHOTS HIT FROM A SIDE HILL LIE
If you have o side hill lie and your feet are
lower than the ball you need to do two
things to get better results. Number 1 -
Choke down on the club a little bit and
Number 2 Align yourself quite far to the
right of your target because there is a
tendency to pull the boll to the left. Be sure
to take plenty of club so you won't swing
too hard.
