Police costs lower
A recent survey of policing
costs in Ontario shows that
Exeter citizens pay slightly
less than the average per
capita cost for police
protection.
Citing some of the statistics
in the report this week, police
committee chairman Gaylan
Josephson reported to council
that Exeter's per capita cost
for policing is 869.55, com-
pared to 871.68 for towns of
comparable size and a provin-
cial average cost of $86.86.
He revealed that Exeter
has one officer for every 618
local citizens, while the pro-
vincial average is one for
every 561 citizens.
The town also pays out less
of its total budget for policing
than most.
The one area in which Ex-
eter's cost are considerably
higher is in the matter of com-
munications. Locally, com-
munications consume 9.4 per-
cent of the police budget,
while the cost in most towns
of comparable size is 1.4 per-
cent of the budget and the nre-
vincial average is 3.4 percent.
"It is considerably higher,"
Josephson said of the local
cost for communications,
which stems primarily from
the Huron central dispatch
service.
He advised council that
Constable Dan Kierstead had
recently completed an ad-
vance training program at
the Aylmer Police College
with a mark of 93 percent,
which was well above the
class average.
He also gave the June
police report, citing the
following points:
Thirteen accidents with
three minor injuries and pro-
perty damage of $6,000, 15 li-
quor investigations, two
break and enters, four fraud
charges, 14 thefts with total
loot being $294.89 of which
8191 was recovered, seven
animal complaints.
It was reported that the re-
cent police auction had netted
$349.15 which has been turn-
ed over to the town coffers.
