Horse, pony
club meets
By Carolyn Pritchard
The fourth meeting of the
Exeter Horse and Pony club
was held July 11. First on the
list of business was the ride-
a-thon. The date .was set for
September 5. It will take
place at Mr. Brand's, and the
time was not decided on.
The second thing to discuss
was the inter -county horse
show in Elmira July 23, also
in Stratford. July 28 is the
regional judging competition.
Marie Debruyn and Cam
Darling will attend. The
members also decided that
the club's third show will be
August 1, in Exeter at the
fairgrounds, at 1 p.m. Parents
are asked to help at this show.
Roll call and the minutes
were done by the club's
secretary. Mr. Brand men-
tioned to the members that
there is a Great Lak Show in
London July 16 and 17.
The next meeting will be
August 15 at the home of
Heather Browning.
After this .was completed
the members were introduc-
ed to a speaker from CHAP-
PA Lois Sommerville in con-
nection with the ride-a-thon.
The club is donating 50 per-
cent of the profit to this
organization.
Lois brought a friend of
hers from the Ontario
Humane Society, Jim Shar-
man. They talked about what
CHAPPA means, its function
and what goes on in this
group. They showed posters
and articles about cruelty to
horses and how members
should report neglected or
not properly cared for
animals.
Pamphlets were passed
around, they contained infor-
mation about laws on horse
and rider riding on the road.
Refreshments were served by
Dean Hayter and his mother.

THE

FUND
THERE WAS LOTS — of entertainment Sunday at Kirkton as area people got together
for the annual Froggin' and Loggin' Day. Here a couple of contestants try their skills
at "log" rolling on the barrels.
Three weeks ago the
Centennials played short
handed and were without both
their regular and second
string goalies but stili manag-
ed to tie Taxandria 2-2. Paul
Vandewalle and Shawn Rot-
teau were the Exeter goal
getters.
Two weeks ago they played
Lucan which also ended in a
2-2 tie. Paul and Terry
Vandewalle scored the Ex-
eter goals. The Centennials
had one of their days where
they couldn't miss the goal
post. Lucan did play strong in
gaining the tie.
Saturday night saw a mid-
.
field battle with neither team
getting any real good scoring
chances. Exeter scored first
with centre forward Paul
Vanderwalle taking a relay
pass from Shawn Rotteau and
putting it in off the goal post.
The Centennials led 1-0 at
half time but at the start of
the second half Nairn was
awarded a penalty shot in
which they made no mistake
on. Later in the second half
one of the Nairn's offenders
deflected the ball wide with
his hands in the penalty area.
Exeter was awarded the
penalty shot and Paul
Vandewalle made no
mistake.
The Centennials defense
played strong throughout the
game. Nairn being known for
scoring in the dying minutes
couldn't break the Centennial
defense. This 2-1 win for Ex-
eter enabled them to tie Nairn
for first place and since Ex-
eter has . a better record
against -Nairn they are
therefore in first place.
Next game is at home for
Exeter, Sunday, at 2:00
against Grand Bend with the
Drillers playing Nairn at 4:00
These games are the last in
regular season play.

who reached on a passed ball
and a long triple which drop-
ped as the centrefielder fell.
The Royals narrowed the
score to 2-1 in the second as
Paul McKnight doubled and
Al Lovell singled. Walters
Falls went up 3-1 in the fourth
inning on a single and - a
throwing error.
The Royals knotted the
count of 3-3. in the bottom of
the seventh as Paul McKnight
reached on an error. Phil
Turner doubled and Al Lovell
knocked them both in with a
single up the middle.
They won the game in the
bottom of the ninth as Paul
McKnight singled and Phil
Turner hit a home run over
right centre field fence to give
the Royals the win. Brian
Hodgins picked up the win for
the Royals allowing two hits
while striking out. seven
batters.
The Owen Sound Gibbys
Sportswear team scored six
runs the first three innings
and went on to a 8-3 win over
the Royals in game two.
Jeff Lindenfield, Doug
Pearson and Dan Heywood
scored the Royals runs.
They managed six hits off
the Owen Sound pitcher. Dan
Heywood took the loss with
relief help from Brad
Marsden who finished up.
They combined to allow -ine
hits while striking out four
batters. '
The next game for the
Royals is Tuesday against 11-
derton in Exeter while Thurs-
day they travel to Granton to
play Bryanston.

Tykes continue
unbeaten streak
Exeter Tykes I team re:
mained undefeated in WOAA
play with a hard fought 14-13
victory over second place
Seaforth.
The locals struggled back
from an early 7-2 deficit to
record the win on a ground
out by Justin Charrette which
scored Mark Burton. Exeter
had gained the tie in the
seventh on a single by Todd
McCann that drove in Mark
Russell and Scott Bishop.
. Russell was the leader of-
fensively as he scored three
runs and two hits while
Harlen Tinney, Scott Bierling
and Alan Blommaert crossed
the plate twice each with
