Express hikes win streak to six
The Exeter Express scored
two victories in Great. Lakes
Senior baseball action this
week to extend their unbeaten
streak to six games.
Tuesday, the Express
blanked the Exeter Co -Op
juniors 4-0 and Sunday they
squeezed past the strong Clin-
ton Colts by a 5-4 count.
The Express are back in ac-
tion tonight, Wednesday at
Exeter Community, Park
when they meet Byron at 7:30
p.m. On the weekend they are
off to Kincardine for a
tournament.
In Tuesday's win over the
juniors, veteran Express
hurler Jim Pfaff was in top
form. He scattered four hits
over the seven inning route
and faced only 27 batters, just
six over the minimum.
The closest the juniors
came to scoring was in the
first inning when Jeff
McKellar singled and got as
far as third base.
The other junior hits, were
a double by Al Gaiser and
singles from the bats of Jeff
Fuller and Paul Gilmour.
Jeff Fuller was on the
mound for the juniors and
also allowed only four hits.
The Express hit the
scoreboard in the second inn-
ing when Kevin Hern singled,
John Hayter was safe\on an
error and both scored on Dan
Heywood's sacrifice bunt and
a groundout by Dave Bogart.
Dave Hunt homered to open
up the fourth inning for the
Express and he was back in
the sixth safe on an error and
scored as the result of Kevin
Hern's sacrifice and John
Hayter's single.
Right hander Ken Pinder
and lefty Jim Guenther com-
bined to get Sunday's pitching
victory for the Express over
Clinton.
Pinder allowed four runs
and six hits over the first six
innings and went into the
Royals beaten
by single runs
The Exeter Royals dropped
two one run games this week
in Southwestern Fastball
League play.
Tuesday they were edged
by Lieury in 12 innings 6-5 and
Thursday they dropped a 3-2
encounter with the Lucan
Irish.
The Royals record is now 10
wins and seven losses. They
host Poplar Hill Thursday
while this weekend they
travel to Tara for a
tournament.
Lieury 6 Royals 5
Lieury scored a run in the
bottom of the sixth and one in
the twelvth to edge the Royals.
6-5.
The Royals took the lead in
the first inning as Barry
Baynham walked and scored
on Brian Hodgins sacrifice
fly.
Lieury tied the score in the
bottom of the first as Glen
Thompson tripled and scored
on a sacrifice fly.
Exeter added three runs in
the second as Jeff Lindenfield
singled, Barry Baynham
reached on an error and Dan
Parsons wins
at Ironwood.
Wayne Parsons recorded a
36 to take low gross honours
in the A flight in Tuesday's
regular men's night at the
Ironwood golf club. Jack
Chipchase won iow net at 32.
In B flight Mark Cronyn's
40 won low gross and Dan
Heywood captured low net
with a 41.
Dave Watson notched a 42
to win C flight low gross and
Bill Gilfillan took low net at
32:
In D flight Ron Heywood
carded a 45 to take low gross
and Gary Dolphin was low net
at 28.
Heywood walked and all
scored on errors.
Lieury narrowed thescore
to 4-3 in the bottom of the se-
cond as Gary MacMaster and
Eric Bulgin scored. They tied
it indhe third as Glen Thomp-
son doubled and scored.
Exeter went up 5-4 in the
top of the sixth when Barry
Baynham singled and scored
on a ground ball. Lieury tied
it in the sixth as Lloyd
Mathers singled and scored
on a single McMaster.
Lieury picked up the winn-
ing run in the twelfth as Rob
Bender doubled and scored.
Glen Thompson got the win
for Lieury. He gave up ten
hits while striking out ten bat-
ters. Brian Hodgins started
for the Royals and gave up six
hits while striking out 11 bat-
ters in seven innings. Dan
Heywood took the loss allow-
ing a run on three hits while
striking out eight batters. ,
Irish :t Royals 2
Lucan Irish came to town
Thursday and edged the
Royals 3-2 to average an
earlier 6-2 loss.
Former Royals pitcher
Doug Todd picked up the win
against his former mater
allowing seven hits while
striking out five batters.
Dan Heywood threw a
strong game for the Royals
allowing only three hits while
striking out eight batters.
The Royals went up 1-0 in
the third as Jeff Lindenfield
doubled and scored on Gary
Skinners single. The Irish
pushed across three runs in
the top of the sixth to take a
3-1 lead. •
In the bottom of the seventh
the Royals pushed across a
run as Phil Turner walked,
Brian Hodgins singled and
Mike Desjardine singled. The
tying run was thrown out at
home plate to end the game.

seventh frame with a one run
lead.
The first Clinton batter in
the seventh singled. Pinder
was able to strike out the next
batter,but,the following hitter
drew a walk.
At this point with a left
handed hitter up, Express
manager Geary Penhale call-
ed in Guenther to try and
.quell the rally.
Guenther walked the first
batter he faced to load the
bases and then settled down
to get a strikeout and groun-
dout to end the game and save
the win for Pinder.
Down by 2-0, the Express
struck for three runs in the
fourth inning. Dave Parsons
singled, Dave Hunt was safe
on an error and Parsons
crossed the plate on Jim
Guenther's double.
Doug Fairbairn's groun-
dout scored Hunt and Guen-
ther came home on a Glenn
Thurman single.
After Clinton went ahead
4-3 in the top of the sixth, the
Express came right back to
get the tying and eventual
winning runs. Dan Heywood
struck out, but, reached first
as the catcher lost the ball. He
stole second, went to third on
a passed ball and scored on
Jim Guenther's sacrifice -fly
after Dave Hunt walked.
Hunt moved to third on a
couple of passed balls and
home as Doug Fairbairn
grounded to second.

Tykes score 9-7
victory over Clinton
The Exeter Tykes I
baseball team won their only
scheduled game last week
-with a 9-7 victory over
Clinton.
David Dalrymple drove in
five runs with a pair of home
runs as Exeter built up an 8-0
lead after three innings.
Harlen Tinney pitched
three innings of no hit ball,
striking out nine to get the vic-
tory. Mark Burton allowed six
runs, struck out three :nd
walked four in his two innings
of work while Alan Blom-
maert wrapped it up by strik-
ing out six batters.
Exeter journeyed. to
Walkerton to participate in
the Mid O'llagan tyke tourna-
ment. Following a thrilling
last out loss to Oakville the
locals defeat/ Hanover•
before. how' out to
Cambridge.
In the loss to Oakville
Haden Tinney pitched five
solid innings allowing four
hits while walking three and
striking out six in a 7-6 loss in
which Exeter battled hack
from a 4-0 deficit.
Jim Ahrens allowed only
two walks and three hits while
striking out six as Exeter
downed Hanover 4-2 in game
two.
In the final game loss to
Cambridge 11-5, Alan Blom-
maert gave up four unearned
runs before giving way to
Ilarlen Tinney in the second
inning. Tinney gave up six
walks while allowing six hits
and striking out eight.
Offensively Todd McCann
led Exeter with four hits and
three walks while David
Dalrymple, David Schwind]
and Jamie Bedard chipped in
with three hits each and Scott.
Bishop scored three runs.
Ladies golf -
at Exeter club
Tuesday members of the
Ladies of the Exeter golf and
Country club had their usual
game with hidden scores go-
ing to Betty Smith, Betty
Coates, Barb Harrison and
Ilelen Wasnidge,
Lowest putts were won by
Wynn Galloway, and Dorothy
Kipfer and the most honest
golfer was Note Smith.

Junior club wins three
The Exeter Co -Op juniors
upped their season record to
10 victories and eight defeats
in the Great Lakes senior
baseball league with three
wins in four starts this week.
The only loss for the juniors
came Tuesday night as they
were blanked 4-0 by the Ex-
eter Express.
Thursday, Joe Fulop's
juniors shutout Thorndale 5-0,
Friday they bombed Walker-
ton 13-3 and Sunday came up
with a close 11-9 win over
Byron.
Two runs in the top of the
seventh inningenabled the
juniors to take Sunday's 11-9
victory in Byron. Holding a
slim one run lead going into
their final bat, Dave Shaw
blasted a bases empty home
run and Al Gaiser was safe on
an error and came home on
singles delivered by Jeff
Fuller and Dave Woodward.
The first two junior runs
came in the second inning on
a double by Dave Woodward
and singles from the bats of
Steve Pearce and Kevin
Easterbrook.
Five runs crossed the plate
in the third on the streng+t. of
a Paul Gil{noyr douole and
singles by Jeft:uller, Brian
Horner, Dave Shaw and Steve
Neil.
In the Exeter fourth; Kevin
Easterbrook singled, went to
third on a pair of wild pitches
and home on Steve Neil's
sacrifice fly.
Steve Pearce was the star-
ting pitcher for the juniors
and he went until the sixth
when he received some help
from Dave Shaw, hut, came
back in the ,bottom of the
seventh to retire the final two
batters.
Nine runs in. a big seventh
inning proved the difference
as the juniors blasted Walker-
ton 13-3.
Six walks aided the seventh
inning rally. Doug Hoffman
and Jeff McKellar each
scored two runs in the big in-
ning. Hoffman had a single as
did Paul Gilmour, Dave
Hayter, Dave Shaw and Jeff
Fuller.
The first Exeter run came
in the third as Jeff Fuller
singled and scored on a
similar hit by Doug Hoffman.
Three runs were added in
the fifth as Jeff McKellar,
Paul Gilmour and Steve Neil
delivered singles.
Kevin Drager was the star-
ting and winning pitcher
allowing only four well scat-
tered hits while fanning 10

Walkerton batters. Dave
Shaw came in to pitch the
final inning and retired the
side in order.
Brian Horner was the win-
ning pitcher Thursday going
the distance against Thorn -
dale giving up a single run on
six hits and picking up seven
strikeouts along the way.
Jeff McKellar singled and
scored the first Exeter run in
the first inning. He came
across on Dave Hayter's
single.
In the Exeter third,
McKellar tripled again
leading off, scored on another
Dave Hayter single. The lat-
ter came home as Dwayne
Laporte singled.
Atoms lose
The Exeter atoms dropped
a 7-2 decision to Arva in area
minor soccer play Monday
night.
Arva came on strong with
five unanswered goals in the
second half. to record the
victory.
John Paul Maurer and
Shawn McFalls were the Ex-
eter marksmen.
Name Heritage

Grade eight students of
Usborne Central School com-
peted for prizes in the draw-
ing of posters advertising the
Heritage Days beef barbecue.
First prize winners were Ed
Coleman and Brad Borland.
Gary Parsons -and Jeff
