Royals hit halfway mark with 10 victory totals The Exeter Royals have now completed halfa season winning 10 games and losing five. This past week they split with Sylvan losing 5-2 in Sylvan while gaining an 8-1 win in Exeter. Sylvan 5 -Royals 2 The hot hitting Royal bats came to a halt in Sylvan Tues- day as Dale Whitelaw held the Exeter club to four hits. Sylvan jumped into a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the se- cond as they had four hits. Rob Holden had a big triple for Sylvan.,, Dan Heywood put Exeter on the board in the thrd as he cracked a home run. They closed the gap to 4-2 in the fourth as Paul McKnight walked and scored on Phil Turner's sacrifice fly. Sylvan added their final run in the bottom of the fourth as Ron Kennedy scored. Brad Marsden started for the Royals and took the loss. Ile gave up four runs on six hits Brian Hodgins went the final three innings allowing a run on five hits while striking out five batters. Royals 8 -Sylvan 1 The Royals wasted no time in taking command Thurs- day. They opened up the bot- tom of the first as Mike Des- jardine singled, Gary Skinner reached on an error and both scored as Paul McKnight lashed a singled. They added two more in the second as Brad Marsden and Dan Heywood singled and Doug Pearson doubled. They went up 6-0 in the third as Gary Skinner walked and Paul McKnight crushed a Drillers win over Lucan The Exeter Drillers scored a 4-1 victory over Lucan Sun- day in Ausable senior league soccer action. • After 20 minutes of play. mostly in the Lucan zone Robert Weersink notched the first Frier goal on a pass from Brian Tapp. Five minutes later Wayne Smith made no mistake by booting the ball from a corner kick right into the net. Lucan scored a quick goal minutes in the second half on- ly to have the Drillers regain their two goal margin as An- drew Winters got a pass to Jeff Weersink for a successful shot. Tuesday night, the Express downed the Clinton Colts 12-8, Thursday they edged the Ex- eter juniors 7-6 and Sunday it was a 13-6 victory over Strathroy. The Express were back in action last night Tuesday against the Exeter juniors and will be at home to the Clinton Colts at Exeter Com- munity Park Sunday after- noon at 1:30 p.m. Two veterans of the Exeter baseball scene have been recruited by the Express and both were instrumental in this week's victories. Right-handed pitcher Jim Pfaff pitched five and one- third innings in the win over Clinton and was two -for -two at the plate and Scott Burton also returned and collected two hits and the same number of runs batted in as the Ex- press edged the juniors. In Tuesday's win over Clin- ton, Pfaff after giving up five runs in the second inning settled down and pitched well until one was out in the sixth and final inning when he needed relief help from Dave Hunt to preserve the win. The Express scored single runs in each of the second and third innings and wrapped up the decision with four runs in the fourth frame and a half dozen markers in the fifth. In the second Randy Kraul singled and scored as Ken Pinder walked, Scott Bu ton was safe on a fielder's ch ice and Jim Pfaff crack a single. The third inning score came as the result of a Kevin Hern double, Dave Bogart single and Randy Kraul's sacrifice fly to left. Dave Hunt doubled, Randy Kraut delivered two singles and Jim Pfaff, Dave Atthill and Dave Bogart each delivered one base blows. Southpaw Jim Guenther went the six distance on the mound for the Express in Thursday's close win over the Co -Op juniors. Pla,, ing manager Glenn Thurman scored the winning run for the Express in the sixth inning as he led off with a single, moved to third as Jim Guenther walked and Randy Kraul sacrificed and scored on a single from the bat of Scott Burton. The first Express run came in the opening inning when Dave Atthill walked and crossed the plate on Glenn Thurman's double. In the second, Randy Kraul singled, moved up to Scott Burton's sacrifice and home on Gary Hartman's fielder's choice. Ken Pinder drew a walk and rivals plated on Brian Mercer's single. A three run Express out- burst in the third was powered by singles by Glenn Thurman, Jim Guenther and Scott Burton. The first junior team run came in the second as Dave Woodward singled and scored on an error and sacrifice fly by Steve Pearce. In the junior third, after two Horse, pony club meets By Carolyn Pritchard The third meeting of the Exeter horse and pony club was held June 20. It was•at Adrianne Brand's. The meeting began with the 4-H pledge which was done by our vice-president Heather Browning. The roll call was taken and the minutes of the last meeting were read. The club discussed old and nein business. Some of the old business was the Regional Judging competition, the gate - sign competition and also the 4-H demonstration competition. We also discussed the turn out to our fun show and how well it went. The new business was that the Zurich horse club is holding a show. We discussed the idea of a ride-a-thon which will consist of a 15 mile ride and the members will be giving 50 percent of the profit to the club and E0 percent to .an organization called C.H.A.P.P.A. which means the Canadian Horse and Pony Protection Association. The members also decided to have another show July 6, which will be held at Mr. Brand's at 1:00 p:m. M r. Brand mentioned to members that we were to ride in the Crediton Summerfest parade which will be on • August 20 at 12:30. The Sum- merfest runs for the weekend of August 19, 20 and 21. After the business was com- pleted the lesson was started. Our lesson this meeting was training your horse. We read over the booklets and talked to the members who attended the showmanship clinic in Seaforth on June 18. These members were Marie DeBruyn and Carolyn Pritchard. We also discussed •the different things you should do to prepare your �`. horse to show. After this was completed, ' we were assigned homework which consists of reading over the booklet Western and English riding. r i " The next meeting lesson will be determining the age of the horse by its teeth. The next meeting will be July 11 at Dean Hayter's home in Cen- tralia at 7:30. Then the meeting was officially closed by the vice president and refreshments were served by Cam Darling. Laporte and Woodward singled in the fifth to account for another junior marker and Brian Horner was hit by a pitch in the sixth and came around to score on con- secutive singles by Al Gaiser and Doug Hoffman. Steve Pearce• wont the distance on the mound for the juniors giving up eight hits while his team-mates touched the offerings of Guenther for the same number of safeties. An eight run rally in the fourth inning was enough to propel the Express to Sun- day's 13-9 win over Strathroy. Dave Hunt was the winning pitcher for the Express. He went the complete nine inning route and scattered a dozen hits. Down by six runs going in- to the bottom of the third, the Express broke the goose egg with four runs on the same number of hits. Doug Fair- bairn tripled, Kevin Hern, doubled and Ken Pinder and John Hayter added singles. In the eight run splurge in the fourth, Dave Atthill drew two walks, Doug Fairbairn tripled and singles were logg- ed by Ken Pinder, Randy Kraul, Brian Mercer, Dave Dave Hunt's single ac- counted for the final Express run in the seventh inning.
