An Exeter woman, Dorothy Sarah Schwartzentruber, had sentence adjourned until September 21 after pleading guilty to failing to comply with a probation order. The order of January 28 required she abstain from the use of alcohol. The charge was laid after she was found to be under the influence of alcohol on February 1.1 when she demanded money from the cashier at a local food store. The Judge adjourned sentence to see if she can cur- tail her drinking. Prior to Tuesdays /court presided over by Judge Cochrane, a sentencing for Frank Janes Briggs, 17, Zurich. was handled by Judge Bell, -who had presided at the trial of the youth on a charge of indecent assault. The pre -sentence report contained an opinion from a medical expert that the ac- cused did not constitute a threat to the community at large. Judge Bell suspended sentence and ordered the youth to be put on probation for three years in which time he is to continue his schooling. undertake counselling at the Iluron Centre or other centres as found appropriate. keep the peace. he of good behaviour and report to pro- bation a'.'horities. the accused was warned that if the terms were broken. he could be returned to court. "Un- fortunately, some contractors did not respect these established standards and CGSB had no legal power to enforce them," he added. He also noted that the regulating and licensing of contractors is a matter of pro- vincial, not federal, jurisdiction. Ouellet advised council in his letter that Canadian law does not require that a private company obtain the federal government's permission to introduce building materials such as LJFFI and before such a product can be banned under the Hazardous Pro- ducts Act, the federal govern- ment must have sufficient evidence to show that a pro- duct may be a health hazard. "Indeed, once this evidence wis obtained, Canada became the first nation in the world to ban UFFI in December, 1980," he advised. open as a weekly Saturday night drop-in centre, beginp- ing July 9. Anyone between the ages of 13 and 18 who wants to spend a few hours playing indoor or outdoor games or just sitting and talking over a Coke is welcome to stop in between 7 and 11 p.m. There is no charge. Randy Cox, youth paster of the adjacent church, noted the number of teenagers con- gregating on the street out- side some of Exeter's retail stores on weekend evenings. He concluded many of the young people had nowhere to go. The idea of providing a place where this age group would he welcome budded and blossomed. The assistant pastor, not too far removed from his own teenage years, has high hopes for the future of the centre. Young people from the church plan to drop in too, to provide spontaneous musical entertaiment, competition at a sedate game of croquet or a no -hold -barred session of ping pong, or to lenda listening ear if that is required. The centre is already equip- ped with tables and chairs, a ping pong table, a badminton net, lawn darts, croquet balls and mallets and a soft drink machine. A horse shoe pitch and video games will come later. If the centre is well - patronized, its hours will be extended to include Friday evenings. Cox extends an inv)'tation to Exeter's teenagers: drop in to 186 Main Street and make yourselves at home.
