HURON PARK — While it's not shopping till you drop,
McCurdy Public School students are learning how to
shop this Christmas season.
McCurdy school council chairperson Karen Windsor
said the Holiday Gift Shop program is provided by a B.C.
company. The urogram gives children their first
Christmas shopping experience.
""We brought it is as a service to the kids," she said.

Here's how it works: parents receive a price break-
down of the many items that cost anywhere from a few
cents to $10. The parents arethen asked to make a list
of the people their child is to, shop for and how much to
spend on them. Then the parent sends the child to
school with some money and their list. At Iunch hour or
after school the students browse the Holiday Gift Shop,
set up in a room in the school, and make their purchas-
es. Items range from fun trinkets to decorations for the
mantlepiece. „
Windsor said the program allows the students to shop
in a safe environment while gaining the confidence f
doing the chore on their own. The program also teaches
children shopping skills, how to count money and lets
them read in a practical atmosphere.
Two years ago McCurdy used a similar program pro-
vided by an Alberta business that has since folded. Last
year the school made Christmas crafts and sold them,
Windsor said.
