OTTAWA — Rose -Marie
Ur is trying to get rid of'
dominance in the grocery
industry.
The Lambton-Kent-
Middlesex MP last week
seconded a private mem-
ber's bill introduced in
the House of Commons to
strengthen the "abuse of
dominance" provisions in
the federal Competition
Act.
"This bill, from my col-
league Dan McTeague,
expands and strengthens
the definition of anti-com-
petitive behaviour dealing
with abuse of dominant
position in the market-
place," said Ur.
"There is increasing
concern, especially in the
grocery industry, that a
concentrated few have a
high level of market dom-
ination at both the whole-
sale and retail level," she
said.
The bill introduced last
week amends the

patient satisfaction com-
ponent of the recently -
released report, which
reviewed the perfor-
mance of Ontario
Hospitals. The study,
which Adamson said she
hops will continue, was
developed by researchers
at the University of
Toronto and funded by
the Ontario Hospital
Association (OHA). One
hundred forty-five sites
contributed to the report.
Four elements were
studied: clinical utiliza-
tion, financial condition
and performance, patient
satisfaction and system
integration. While the
Huron Perth hospitals
were above average in
patient satisfaction, it
ranked average with
other community hospi-
tals in the other three ele-
ments studied. She said
the partnership will be
studying the above aver-
age hospitals to see how it
can improve.
In the patient satisfac-
tion survey, 55,000 sur-
veys were sent out with a
response rate of 55 per
cent. It is the first stan-
dardized patient satisfac-
tion survey in Ontario and
the largest in North
America.
The eight hospitals in
the Huron Perth partner-
ship were studied as one,
so individual results from
the hospitals aren't avail-
able, Adamson said.
She said the report
looked at overall health
care quality, housekeep-
ing and nursing and
physician care.
Adamson, who sat on
the OHA advisory com-
mittee overseeing the
report, said the purpose
of the report is to improve
health care in Ontario.

Exeter Hydro is
Ready for Y2K
Throughout the year, our utility has evaluated and tested
all our key systems in anticipation of the year 2000. For
example throughout the year Exeter Hydro along with our
power supplier, Ontario Hydro, tested key date -sensitive
equipment and systems.
The success with testing tells us that, come New Years Eve,
1999, we do not expect any interruptions to the power ,
supply in Exeter. Obviously, no utility can guarantee it wili
be 100% problem -free as it passes into the new
millennium. However, at Exeter Hydro, we'll do everything
possible to ensure a continuous supply of electricity and
water.
We believe that Exeter Hydro is prepared for the new
millennium. We do not anticipate any problems with the
delivery of electricity or water and hope that everyone
enjoys a happy New Years Eve with the lights on!
yeaprocess, Adamson
said. Last year's Report
Card '98 divided the
province into regions and
studied each region as a
whole, but not individual
hospitals.
"It's an excellent begin-
ning," Adamson said of
the recent report, "and
we need to continue to
support this process and
work with the Ontario
Hospital Association."

from engaging in anti-
compPtitive acts.
"Some producers and
suppliers can never sell
their goods at some gro-
cery stores, as they have
a monopoly on supply,"
Ur said. "While it looks
like competition in some
communities, most gro-
cery stores are owned by
just a couple of compa-
nies. The bill addressed
some of the concerns that
the Competition Act must
be able to prevent market
domination from dictating
how an industry will
operate and to protect
competition and the inter-
ests of consumers."
Ur also said domination
of an industry by a few
petition
companies is not good for
healthy competition and
fair prices.
"The Competition Act
must have the tools to
fight anti-competitive
activity by dominant play-
ers in the market."
She said dominance is
also seen in agri-food
industries such as beef.
