Recruitment
committee
efforts
deemed
successful
EXETER — Two new
doctors have been recruit-
ed to the South Huron
area thanks to the efforts
of the Medical
Recruitment Committee.
Dr.Theresa Reynolds
will be working at Dr.
Linda Steele's office and
Dr. Krista Fattim will be
working at Dr. Jerry
Jadd's office.
South Huron, like many
rural communities, has.
_ been actively recruiting
for about one year. The
first step in the process
• was the Ministry of Health
underserviced designation.

pital board members and
medical personnel which

to recruit potential physi-
cians.
Initiatives included
recruitment at universi-
ties, advertising in Medical
Post and on the Internet
and the use of Medical
Placement Services, ,a
recruitment agency that
sent out mass mailings.
Committee members gave
tours of the area to several
physicians.
One of the strategies suc-
cessful in the past for
Exeter was to have new
physicians work in the
area to try it out. Steele
and Jadd started in the
rural community in this
way and have stayed.
The committee hopes
this same strategy will
Work with Reynolds who
has made the commit-
ment to' stay in Exeter for
one year starting Jan. 4.
By being involved in
recruitment tours, the
committee was exposed to
incentives other communi-
ties were offering to
attract physicians — some
have offered $50,000.
The South Huron com-
mittee has offered a
$10,000 incentive for
physicians to commit to
the area for one year,
hoping they will want to
_stay longer.

ZURICH Get ready to

• Major . fund-raising
efforts for the campaign
to save the Babe Siebert -
Memorial Arena in Zurich
should begin in the new
year, according to new
committee chairperson
Jody Durand.
Durand appeared
before council at last
Thursday's meeting and
gave an update ,on the
committee's actions.
The committee is hold-
ing a fund-raising New ,
Year's Dance at the "
arena. Tickets are $30
per person•and Durand
said he expects the event
will be sold out, although
there were still tickets
available when he spoke
to council.
• In January the commit-
tee will be meeting and
sending out tenders on
construction for the reno-
vations for the arena. The
committee will Itlso be
hiring a project supervi-
sor to ensure things hap-
pen on time and within
budget, Durand said. •
Major fund-raising will
begin in February, when
the committee canvasses
Zurich and the surround-
ing area. Durand said the
committee needs to raise
$800,000 for the project.
He geld he's confident the
money can be raised.
While they've applied to
the province for a
$260,000 Millennium
Fund Grant, Durand said
the committee's not plan-
ning on getting any gov-
ernment assistance.

our _blessings
Dear Editor:
I have a renewed respect for our firefight-
ers and the danger they face each time -they
go to a fire. At our house fire, late Nov. 40,
these men saved our pets and most of OUT
contents. Things that could nev0-

Explaining that people
have already come for-
ward to donate towards
the cause unsolicited,
Durand told council, "The
quiet majority is willing to
help."
Durand said the com-
mittee will be asking the
village and Hay Township
to co-sign a loan from the
province so construction
can start before funds are
raised.
Renovations on the
arena will start in April
and Durand said much of
the interior work such as
the boards and seating
will be done before the
Bean Fest starts in
August.
The rest of the renova-
tions, including new
dresshig rooms, should be
finished before the ice
goes in next fall.

Don't forget about fire
safety over the holidays
By Craig Bradford
• TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Candfes and real Christmas trees don't
mix.
That's part of the message from Exeter and Area Fire
Chief John Morgan when it comes to holiday fire safety.
Putting candles on or near a Christmas tree may give
that authentic, old fashion look and feeling, but real
Christmas trees are the ideal fuel for a fire.
Morgan said only mini -lights should be used to light
Christmas trees: The larger outside lights may look
