LUCAN BIDDULPH —
The next step in selling
the former Village of
Lucan office has begun
with the hiring of a real
estate agent.
Council took offers from
three real estate agents
and decided to go with
John Tsantilas, whose 4
1/2 per cent commission
from the buildin'g's selling
price was the lowest of
the three offers.
Tsantilas' submission to
council also suggested the
Main Street building
could sell in the $60,000-
$70,000 range. Council
closed the meeting to the
public to discuss the list

price after deciding at its
Dec. 7 meeting to use
Tsantilas as its agent.
The former Village of
Lucan office, no Longer
used by the municipality
since the amalgamation
of Lucan and Biddulph
Township, has been the
topic of much discussion
lately because the
Ausable Community
Centre wanted to lease it
from the township for 15
years at $1 per year. That
request was turned down
by council last month and
council moved to sell the
building.
Also on Dec. 7, Tony
Demas appeared before
council and said he wants
to buy the building,
restore it and turn it into
a small hotel, with per-
haps a dining room on the
main floor.
Demas runs Stephie's
Restaurant in Lucan and
a bed and breakfast in
Middlesex Centre.
Demas said he believes
business in Lucan has a
future and said there is a
need for a hotel in the
municipality.
Other notes from Lucan
Biddulph's Dec. 7 meet-
ing:
`No' to 2001
Summer Games
Council has decided not
to donate any money to
the 2001 Canada Summer
Games. The discussion
followed a request from
the Friends of the Games
for a donation of $2,001.
While Coun. Harry
Wraith said the munici-
pality should give some
money to the games, per-
haps $500, Coun. Paul
Wallis said he was wor-
ried council would receive
a deluge of donation
requests from other orga-
nizations if it donated to
the 2001 Games.
Coun. Perry Caskanette
said he didn't want to
send the Friends of the
Games any money
because proposals to the
Games to let them use the
Lucan arena for events
were ignored.
Keeping the cannon
Council has decided to
keep the Market Street
Park Cannon after trying
to donate it to the Lucan
Legion Last month.
Council tried to give away
the cannon because its
insurance company
deemed it unsafe, but the
Legion didn't want it for
just that reason.
Council then discussed
selling the cannon but
Deputy Reeve Bob
Benner, saying he hated
to be told what to do by
an insurance company,
said he wants council to
keep the cannon where it
is.
Caskanette agreed and
said the cannon can be
made safe by putting a
fence around it. Council
then decided to keep the
cannon at Market Street
Park.
