Panthers tie arch -rivals Listowel
EXETER — Ouch.
That's the sound one
might have heard from
the South Huron District
High School bench at the
end of Friday's high
school boys hockey game
at South Huron Rec
Centre versus the
Listowel Lightning.
Leading 4-2 in the third
period, the Panthers gave
up two goals including the
tying goal with 20 sec-
onds left to settle for the
tie. The tying goal was
scored with Listowel's
goalie on the bench in
favour of the extra attack-
er. Listowel was pressur-
ing South Huron when
the puck was cleared out
of the Panther zone down
the ice. One official first
indicated the puck had
been touched yet ulti-
mately the call brought
the faceoff back into the
South Huron zone.
Listowel won the draw
and a couple of passes
later the Lightning scored
on a shot from the point.
Panthers coach Mike
Soldan said the tying goal
is an example of how crit-
ical little things can be in
hockey. For example,
faceoff expert Andrew
Mayers did not suit up for
the game due to a hand
h jm'y
"Losing that faceoff cost
the Panthers a draw for
first place," he said.
South Huron is in sec-
ond place, a point behind
Listowel in the seven
team division.
The Panthers scored
first at 10:06 of the first
period when Mike Seip
connected from Scott
Keys. The Lightning drew
even less than three min-
utes later.
Darryl Bourne gave the
Panthers the lead with
4:40 left in the first period
after completing a rush
down the right side of the
rink started by a feed
from Scott Davies. Bourne
found the twine with a
slap shot from the top of
the faceoff circle.
Brandon Martin gave
South Huron a 3-1 lead
early in the second 'period
after scoring on a shot
similar to Bourne's that
found the top corner.
Listowel inched closer
by scoring about five min-
utes later while South
Huron's Steve Rasenberg
was in the penalty box.
The Panthers held on
and padded their lead
when Seip scored his sec-
ond goal of the game
from Keys with forty-five
seconds left in the period.
The game marked the
second tie for the teams
out of three meetings this
season. Listowel won the
first game although it was
tied late in the third. The
other tie came at the
Norwell tournament.
Friday's game was a
chippy affair with several
penalties including a
major for slashing against
Listowel and a double
minor versus South
Huron for spearing.
Soldan said his team is
ahead of their agenda for
their first season back to
Huron -Perth play. The
hope was to play
"respectable" hockey and
perhaps make the .500
mark. So far the Panthers
have surpassed those
expectations and are cer-
tain of a playoff spot.
"At this point in time the
Panthers are contenders,"
Soldan said.
