Federation urges caution on gas leases
CLINTON - The Huron County
Federation of Agriculture
encourages farmers to get spe-
cialized legal counsel when con-
sidering signing natural gas stor-
age and exploration leases.
The federation said landowners
have many questions regarding
their rights and what they should
or should not be signing.
"It must be emphasized that
exploration and storage leases
are legal documents, extremely
complicated and the terms are
long lasting - much longer than
even the best of marriages," said
HCFA President Pat Down.
Some of the more common con-
cerns landowners need to have
addressed in the leases are well
water contamination, dispute
resolution process, tile drainage
damage. storage pressure, fence
damage, liability if the company
becomes insolvent, crop losses,
construction standards, site
restoration, location of above
ground permanent features, dis-
turbance damages, abandonment
procedures, lease extensions,
in4efinite lease renewals and
en ronmental damages.
These lease agreements are
legal documents written by the
lease companies.
The federation urges its mem-
bers and all rural landowners to
talk with neighbours to see what
they have been offered, seek
information and advice and not
to feel pressured to sign an
agreement.
"If your property is truly impor-
tant to the company's plans, peo-
ple will deal with you in a profes-
sional manner," said Down. "As
farmers, we are sharp at dealing
with other businesses for the best
input costs, machinery and live-
stock. Be the same with land
lease agents."
Ingratta to explain cutbacks
CLINTON - The Huron
County Federation says
agriculture has taken its
share of funding cut-
backs.
To understand what
the latest Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture,
Food and Rural Affairs
cuts mean, the federa-
tion is organizing a
meeting for all sectors of

County on Monday, Dec.
