(photo/Barb Consitt) Varna church holds Christmas concert By Joan Beierling VRANA CORRESPONDENT VARNA - The Goshen U.C.W. met on Tuesday Dec. 7 for a dinner at the Harbour Lights in Bayfield. Each person was presented with a lovely Christmas corsage. Thanks to Helen Keys for making them. Marg Robinson, Kate Keys and Helen Keys conducted a Christmas Worship time. A short business meeting was held. Donations were made to various causes. The group then travelled to Goderich to attend the "Sound of Goderich" concert. It was much enjoyed by every- one. The next meeting of the Stan Lee Club will be held on Tuesday January 11 at,1:30 pm. Euchre will be played followed with lunch. Come along and bring a friend. The community's sincere sympathy goes out to the families of Muriel Grigg. Order your amaryllis bulbs from Bill Taylor at $10 each to support the Huntington Society.Please call Bill at 233-3276. They would make a nice Christmas gift for that hard to buy for person. Sunday, Dec. 12, the Varna United Church travelled WI enjoys dinner By Muiel Lewis GRANDTON CORRESPONDENT Granton members attended the Kirkton Horticultural Society's potluck supper it the Community Centre on Tuesday evening, Dec. 7 and enjoyed the program featuring floral demon- strations by Josh Rath of Rath's Roses, St. Marys. Clandeboye Women's Institute members, hus- bands and friends, includ- ing some from Granton, enjoyed supper at the Pinewood Restaurant in Ailsa Craig on Wednesday evening, Dec. 8. Euchre followed when prizes for high scorers were awarded to Barbara Carter and Roy Cunningham, for lone hands to Marilyn Dixon and Andy Thompson, and for low scorers to Betty Hall and Wilmer Scott. Advent candles lit At St. Paul's Anglican Church, Kirkton on Advent 3, Dec. 12, Rev. Glenda Meakin's message was about gifts everyone can give. The Advent candles for Hope, Peace and Joy were lit by Sarah Blackler, Ella Urquhart and Elizabeth Hawkins, assisted by Emma Blackler. Brent Blackler read the lessons. A time of fellowship with a potluck dinner followed c*" the service: At the Granton United Church on Sunday, Dec. 12 Ina Hariton and Grandson Gregory Hariton lit the Advent Candle. April Bryan led A Legend of Christmas in three parts and Gerry and Bob McAlorum read the scripture passages. Pastor Val Hodgins concluded with The Questions and Some Answers. The choir sang 'Mary's Boy Child' and the White Gifts were presented. The Jr. Youth Group met at the Church on Sunday evening. U.C.W. Granton U.C.W. Unit 4 met for supper at Norah Wissel's home on Monday evening, Dec. 6 when the grace was said by Pastor Val Hodgins. President Marilyn Humphrey chaired the meeting which followed, reading the scripture from Luke and Joy to the World, closing the prayer. After the general busi- ness, Bettie Dann contin- ued with the program, reading a poem called The Quest. Stories pertaining to Christmas were read by Bettie and Marilyn and the latter closed with a reading 'Twas a month atter Christmas.' back through time via Professor Cameron's Time Machine and visited Bethlehem of long ago. The con- gregation glimpsed scenes at the stable as shepherds, angels and wisemen came to honour Or Christ child. The entire Sunday School along wit i a eir teachers captured and portrayed the wonde d mystery of' the Saviour's birth. Cast Professor was Camerons Laurie while Jennifer Keys was the child. Travellers were Tammy Peck,Genelle Reid and Jentje Steenbeek. Townspeople were Danny Peck and Ryan Keys. Mary was portrayed by Stacey Consitt and Darren Keys por- trayed Joseph. Shepherds were Robyn Taylor, Jayme Dowson, Blake Reid, Mavis Govier and Jacob Govier. Angels were Leanne Stephenson, Katrina, McKayla -and Brianne Merner, Annie McBride and Kirsten Cooper. The Magi were Danny Peck, Ryan Keys, Krysten Dowson,and Keyy Consitt. Rommert Steenbeek was the prompter. Directors were Lori Merner and the Sunday School teachdrs. Familiar and loved Christmas Carols were sung and Pastor Van Bergen read and spoke briefly on verses of John 1 which tell of Jesus coming to us as the true light of the world. Cara Stephenson and Deb Rathwell sang Redeeming Love, and the Reid family, Doug, Joanne, Genelle and Blake lit the third Advent candle - the Candle of Joy. Following the commissioning and blessing a very spe- cial visitor arrived and gifts were distributed to the children, however Santa Claus was not able to stay and join in the fellowship lunch with the rest of the church family. Birthday wishes are extended to Julie McBride on Dec. 18 and a reminder of the Open House at the manse the same day from 2-4 pm. On Dec. 19th the fourth Sunday of Advent will be celebrated at Goshen United Church and the Christmas Eve early family ser- vice will be at 7 pm at the Goshen. Church. A Community Candlelight Communion Service will be celebrated at Varna on Christmas Eve. at 11:30 pm and everyone is welcome. A caretaker is needed for the Varna Church effective Feb.1/2000. Exeter 235-4892 Exeter senior citizen Christmas party enjoyed EXETER - The Exeter Ladies Auxiliary - and the Exeter Legion men prepared and served a turkey supper to 70 members and guests at the Exeter Senior Citizen Christmas party. Olga Davis said grace, and the president wel- comed everyone - 12 poinsettias were given out as gifts. A variety program followed consisting of two skis; several readings, a make believe band, two clogging numbers. Tom and Rose Mergian from Huron Park played several musical numbers. President Lois McFalls closed the meeting with a Christmas prayer and wished everyone the very best for the holiday season. The next meeting Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m. Note change of time.
