(pho- toslKim Pearce) Minister won't increase percentage for sewer project By Scott Nixon TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF LUCAN BIDDULPH -- A request for more funds for the Granton sewer project has officially been denied by Environment Minister Tony cement. Township Reeve Earl French, administrator Ron Reymer, engi- neer Bob Stevenson and Perth - Middlesex MPP Bert Johnson visit- ed the minister in October request- ing an increase in funds for the project and an extension on when work has to be finished for eligibili- ty for funds. In a letter from Clement, council learned the funding percentage, about 55 per cent for the sewer project, cannot be increased.Council was seeking more funds because it claims other municipalities working on similar projects have received more money. The province's grant works out to $853,000. The letter also stated the time line in granting the funds cannot be extended, although Reymer told the T -A he might be able to get a three-month extension. With the letter from the minister, the much -delayed project will now have to be finished in one construc- tion season. Reymer said there can be no more delays in order for the project to be finished in time. Reymer told council he was, dis- appointed in aement's letter. New library finally done Another Lucan Biddulph project which has seen many delays is the new Lucan Library, which should have been finished last winter. Instead, construction on the project is supposed to finish today, with the new library opening sometime in • mid-January. Reymer said the reason for the month-long gap between construc- tion completion and the opening is that with the holiday season, the library didn't think there would be enough staff to be open before mid- January. The county, though, has agreed to pick up the cost for remaining in the existing library for January. Deputy Reeve Bob Benner told it it's re : rettable the new • library won't be open in December for children to use over the holi- days. Arena needs new chiller The Lucan Community Metilbsia Centre needs a new chiller. Arena manager Wayne Hall told the T -A the existing chiller, over 21 years old, is leaking and staff have temporarily repaired it so leaking fluid is being directed back into the chiller. Hall said there is really. no pre- ventative maintenance that can be done on a chiller and once its life is up a new chiller has to be bought. The arena has received two quotes on anew chiller and the arena board will go with the lower quote, which came from Drennan Refrigeration of London at $33,950. Hall sail' he's trying to wait until the area- traditionally shuts down in May to replace the new chiller. Another alternative is to .wait until the weather gets cold and have the chiller installed this winter. If the weather isn't cold enough, Hall said the arena would have no ice • within a couple of days if the chiller breaks. December 3, 1999 South Huron Hospital has followed the Ontario Hospital Association's plan for managing the Year 2000 problem. Accordingly, the Hospital appointed a Year 2000 Project Coordinator and with the assistance of the Hospital's Year 2000 Steering Committee and the Hospital's staff, the Hospital has substantially completed the process of identifying and assessing the scope and impact of the Year 2000 problems affecting the Hospital and its supply chain. This assessment included, but was not limited to a review of our medical equipment, computer and information systems, plant systems and equipment. We are also in the process of implementing appropriate corrective and contingency measures to respond to any programs which may occur as a result of the Year 2000 problem. Due to the nature of any Year 2000 project, including the complexities and time constraints involved, as well as our dependence upon many factors outside our control, it is impossible for us to guarantee that the Hospital's operations will not be affected by the Year 2000 problem. However, we are taking all reasonable steps within our control toward ensuring that any Year 2000 problems affecting the Hospital, its patients or customers will be minimized. Since 1998, the number of polio cases reduced by 85% due to the diligent efforts of the World Health Organization and Rotary's 'Polio Plus' campaign. The disease is now mainly in south Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Health Canada- is funding a research project to explore the claims of the use of marijuana for persons with chronic illness- es like cancer and AIDS. The results could be available next year and might result in restricted legal use of the drug in spe- cific cases. We'll keep you posted. Optimism is better the pessimism. That certainty is true with ,people who had by-pass surgery-. Those who were naturally optimistic, who channeled their energy into ttiinga.they could control and were accepting of thing they couldn't, recovered much better and had less retum vistato the hospital. Considering the complexity of today's medications, it was nice to hear that 86% of women consult a pharmacist before buying a non-prescription medication. Men aren't as ready to ask for help. (it must be similar to men not asking for directions when lost). 1101101 MBE= Ltd Phone 235-1982 440 Main St., Exeter "Your Health Care Pharmacy" fURON PERTH H Partnersr lip Year 2000 Information Vice President Multi -Site Administration Huron Perth Hospitals Partnership Sincerely, Doug i-er, Chair of the Board South Huron Hos i ital
