And in its . wake, it leaves a path of illness, and sometimes, death. But new this flu season, Canadians will be better able to prepare them- selves for an influenza outbreak in their area, right in the comfort of their own homes. This week marks the launch of Flu Report, cre- ated by Hoffmann LaRoche Limited (Roche Canada) and The Weather Network. Sponsored by Roche Canada, the first-ever nationally , televised influenza tracking report will air daily from Dec. 6 to March 26 on The Weather Network. Flu Report will air from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily at 39 minutes after the hour, and will be updated regu- larly in order to ensure the most timely and accu- rate informatier, nn the locations of flu alerts and outbreaks. "Flu Report is an early - warning system that will enable Canadians, partic- ularly high-risk patients, to better prepare for the threat of exposure to the flu virus," explains Dr. Donald Low, infectious disease specialist, Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto. "Influenza is a serious medical condition and this first -of -its kind initia- tive is essential to be suc- cessful recognition and treatment of influenza. It will also be a valuable asset as Canada prepares for future influenza epi- demics," adds Dr. Low. In addition to monitor- ing the status of flu throughout the country, Flu Report also includes a series of 30 -second infor- mation segments, hosted by Dr. Low, which focus on influenza -related top- ics, such as: what is flu; diagnosis of flu; the differ- ences between flu and the common cold; the impor- tance of early detection and treatment; treatment options, and transmission. In order to bring this important information to Canadians, a timely and accurate influenza track- ing network has been established in Canada. More than 200 Canadian physicians across the country will make up the network; this team will track the spread of flu, identify flu activity levels in local communities and report their findings to a co-ordinating centre for analysis.
