Irish coach Bill Bourne said the game was close but his team was ready to capitalize when the opportunity arose in the third. "In the long run (Mount Brydges) got tired," he said. The win brings Lucan's record to 13-6 and 26 points, good for first place and a two point Lead on the second place Exeter Hawks. The Irish also have two games in hand over Exeter. On the Irish injury front, Scott Wheatley is listed as day-to-day with a sore shoulder. Wheatley, Ben Dobbie, Roy Davis and Chad Greenlee were called up to play with the St. Marys Jr. B Lincolns on Friday versus Strathroy. St. Marys won 10-7 and Greenlee notched three assists. On Sunday, GreeMClee, Dobbie and Davis played another game for St. Marys, this time versus St. Thomas. Greenlee scored a regulation time goal in the Lincolns' 5-4 shootout win. Greenlee missed with his shootout opportunity. MOUNT BRYDGES — .The Exeter Hawks may be charging hard, but the Lucan Jr. D Irish still have dibs on first place in the Morenz Division. For now. The Irish held on to top spot with a 6-2 win at Mount Brydges Sunday. Tied 2-2 after the sec- ond period, the Irish came on for four answered goals in the last frame for the victory. Those last four goals included two on the pow- erplay and one short- handed. Mount Brydges scored 5:30 into the game for an early 1-0 lead they held to near the end of the sec- ond period. Lucan's Chad Greenlee evened the score with 4:43 left in the second from Kevin Dunbar and Andrew Moriarity. The Irish went up 2-1 when Ryan Keating scored from Scott Wheatley and Corey Smith a scant 16 seconds later. The Bulldogs tied the game with 2:35 left in the period. Greg Henderson started Lucan's goal parade in the third period by scor- ing on the powerplay at 4:41 from Ben Dobbie and Mike Burns. Dunbar put the Irish up 4-2 by scoring on the powerplay at 6:15 from Chad Greenlee Greenlee and Moriarity. Greenlee scored his sec- ond goal of the night from Moriarity and Matt Porter with 9:53 left in the game. Henderson notched his second goal of the game, this time shorthanded from Dobbie, to put the nail in Mount Brydges' coffin. The Hawks had a boffo home stand on the weekend with a 6-0 shellacking of Seaforth Friday and a 3-1 victo- ry over Port Stanley Sunday. Exeter goaltender Ryan 011son earned the shutout versus Seaforth and faced 18 shots while his teammates • peppered Seaforth goalie Marty frayne with 38 shots. Seaforth paid dearly for its penalties with the Hawks scoring four of their six goals on the powerplay. Jason Grenier got Exeter: on the score- board with a power- play goal from Jeremy Geoffrey and Jaakko Heikkinen 6:25 into the first period. Captain Dave Farquhar made it 2-0 by scoring on the pow- erplay mid -way through. the first frame from Tyler McTavish and Heikkinen. Jeff Glover scored yet another powerplay,' goal with two seconds left in the period from McTavish. Exeter continued the barrage in the second period. Henny Pfaff scored an even strength goal 3:35 into the period from Jeremy Vanbergen and Geoffrey. Less than five minutes later Christian Stuckless made it 5-0 by scoring on the pow- erplay .from Heikkinen and Ben McCann. Jarrett Jeffrey added insult to injury by scor- ing Exeter's last goal with 1:05 left in the game from Geoffrey. The Port Stanley game was tied 1-1 till mid -way through the third period when Exeter scored two goals within a minute and a half. The frus- trated Lakers then buried themselves by taking several dumb penalties for the rest of the game. Geoffrey gave the Hawks the lead 7:50 into the first period from Jeffrey. The Hawks have now ' won four games in a row and five of their last six to bring their record to 12-9 and 24 points. Despite their stellar play, Exeter remains in second place in the Morenz Division, two points behind Lucan. Hawks coach Andy Friyia is pleased with his team's progress. "Maybe this team better than I thought or maybe we're just too stubborn to go away," he mused. When asked what the secret formula to their recent winning ways, Friyia chose to play it careful. "My systems are now our systems," he said. "They've bought into them." from Jason Friyia said the focus the last three games has been on defence and it has paid off with a 1.00 GAA over that time. Exeter's special teams are also clicking and that success goes hand in hand with their dis- ciplined play. The Hawks have one of their most difficult weekends of the season with three games in three nights: they host the Irish Friday at 8:30 p.m. and travel to Parkhill Saturday and head to Lambeth Sunday. On a breakaway, Exeter Juvenile Chiefs forward Scott Keys, left, has his shot stopped by Thedford goalie John Dejong during Saturday's game at South Huron Rec Centre.The Chiefs doubled Thedford 6-3. Michael Seip led the way offensively with two goals and an assist while John Carr and Keys both added a goal and two assists. Other goals were scored by Chad Monteith and Chris Reaburn.Assists were earned by Ryan Carroll,TrevorTaylor and Michael Wilhelm. Exeter led 2-0 after the first period and 3-1 after the sec- ond.The Chiefs were up 6-1 at one point in the third period before penalty trouble set in.
