Biddulph student enjoys play
Biddulph Central School's teacher Janine
DeVree organized a "review" assignment for the
students. The best Dracula review chosen was by :
Noralee Peters, a grade 8 student.
By Noralee Peters
By On October 20, when the seniors of Biddulph
walked in to the Avon Theatre to see the musical
Dracula, I don't think we expected anything like
what we saw..Ms. Devree (our music and drama
teacher) had already been sucked by Dracula's
marvelous performance and had thought seeing
Dracula would fit in with our study musicals. My
overall opinion of Dracula would be that it has a
lot more than bite. A fine cast, props, settings,
costumes and crew brought Bram Stokers novel
back to life.
Having to do research on Dracula, I found the
name for the fictional character we see in horror
films, cartoons and even as a Halloween costume
was not the original name Bram had for his main
character. The original name for this bloodsuck-
ing, undead creature was actually Count Wampyr.
Bram had found a quote in Wallachian saying
Dracula meant "Devil". This was hot quite accu-
rate. Dracula's a diminutive of Dracu, a name for
Prince Vlad III which Bram had based his main
character on. 1
The highlight of the evening had to be the
intense fire that brought Dracula to his fiery
grave. Although Dracula has a shadow, the cast is
applauded d
for its realistic portrayal
of each char-
acter. The heat between Lucy and Dracula was
noticed as being intense and seductive. The music
was sensational. It has depth and feeling. The

music was also eerie and mysterious. I don't think
I disliked anything in this musical because it was
so captivating. You wouldn't even notice the
faults.
As I said before, Dracula is a sensational musi-
cal. I would recommend it to anyone who loves
drama and suspense all rolled into one fantastic
musical at the Stratford festival. From the fur-
thest seat to the nose bleed section you could see
Bram Stoker's novel come to life.

June .Crowley.
