Task Force t o meet with
Federal Competition Bureau
TORONTO - Consumer and
Commercial Relations Minister Bob
Runciman announced that the Ontario
task force reviewing gas prices will
meet with the federal Competition
Bureau as part of its investigation.
"I had the opportunity to present
Ontarians' concerns about high and
volatile gasoline prices at the feder-
al/provincial/territorial meeting of
consumer ministers in Banff. As a
result of raising this issue with
Industry Canada Minister John
Manley, he offered to have members
of the Ontario task force meet with
officials from the federal Competition
Bureau," said Runciman. "1 believe
this co-operative effort will enhance
the work of the task force."
On Nov. 17, Minister Runciman
announced the formation of a task
force of four MPPs to meet with con-
sumers, consumer advocates, petrole-
um industry representatives and inde-
pendent gas retailers. The task force
has been formed to develop recom-
mendations to deal with the problem
of high and volatile gas prices and
pass their findings along to the feder-
al govetment, which has responsibil-
ity for the gasoline marketplace ander
the Competition Act.
The task force wilt - aired by
John O'Toole, Parli : sistant
to the Minister of C r and
Commercial Relations ane PP for
Barrie-Simcoe-Bradford. Other mem-
bers are Dan Newman, MPP for
Scarborough Southwest, and Ted
Chudleigh, MPP for Halton.
The task force milli hold its fist meet-
ing next week and complete its report
by Spring, 2000.
