Teachers' union begins survey
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER Just what
effect have Mike Harris's
reforms had on educa-
tion? That's what the
Ontario Secondary
Schools' Teachers
Federation (OSSTF) is
trying to find out by sur-
veying its members.
Provincial executive
officer for OSSTF Jim
Douglas and local presi-
dent Bill Huzar visited
South Huron District High
School on Monday and
have recently visited
other high schools in
Huron and Perth coun-
ties.
Douglas said the study,
called Impact 2000, is the
union's way of directly
finding out what its mem-
bers think about -reforms
from the govern=
ment. He said while there
have been many changes,
including the new cur-
riculum, OSSTF wants to
find out if these changes
have been for the better.
The study survey start -
ed a month ago and-
Douglas
ndDouglas said results
should be released to the
school boards, the public
and the provincial gov-
ernment in the spring.
While Douglas wouldn't
release any survey results
yet, he did say teachers
are showing concern over
the province's changes
and are eager to partici-
pate in the survey. He
said he hopes for a 15-20
per cent participation
rate.
Locally, Huzar said
there are concerns about
a lack of funding and the
issue of schobl closures.
Huzar said it should be
made clear to the public
that some schools in the
Avon Maitland District
School Board are facing
closure because of cut-
backs from the province,
not because they're not
.full or aren't fulfilling the
needs of the community.
He added the loss of a
school to a rural commu-
nity is particularly hard
because the community
often uses a school for
many activities. While
South Huron District High
School doesn't face clo—
sure, he said there is the
threat of high school: clo-
sures in Seaforth and
Mitchell.
Douglas and Huzar
agreed the government
'has been making many
mages at a rapid pace.
'What is the real aged -
da?' Douglas asked,
adding he wants to know
if the province is trying to
improve education or just
save money.
Fier concurred, say-
ing;, "Evolution is more
effective than revolution."

Douglas said he hopes
the government makes
fewer changes in the
future and hopes the sur-
vey can force the govern-
ment to improve the
school system. He said
the survey offers a
chance for "all of us" to
look at the state of the
school system.
In addition to teachers,
OSSTF represents educa-
tional assistants, custodi-
ans, instructors and cleri-
cal workers. The survey
asks participants to rate
many of the province's
changes. to schools,
including the new cur-
riculum, funding, more
student testing, the cre-
ation of school councils
and the elimination of
five professional develop-
ment days for staff. The
survey also leaves a
blank space for partici-
pants to express their
concerns.

BEST SELLING PLANS OF THE DECADE 1997
The time honoured heritage look has experienced a huge revival in the nineties and is still going
strong. Our eighth installment in the Best Sellers series combines heritage and contemporary
elements to create what is now commonly referred to as a Neo -Heritage look.
Gable accents with decorative brackets, horizontal siding, and a covered front verandah recall the
charming heritage style. And, in keeping with the West Coast Contemporary look, this home has a
common hip roof at a moderate pitch, and a raised living room ceiling height with the roof extending
into the upper floor roof system.
inside, an archway provides a subtle division between the living and dining area without affecting the
sense of spaciousness achieved by the open plan design. A country kitchen style atmosphere is
created by the combined kitchen and family room which features a handy work island, a bayed out
breakfast nook, and a cozy gas fireplace.
