That's what the Ontario Secondary Schools' Teachers Federation (OSSTF) is trying to find out by sur- veying its members. Provincial executive officer for OSSTF Jim Douglas and local presi- dent Bill Huzar visited South Huron District High School on Monday and have recently visited other high schools in Huron and Perth coun- ties. Douglas said the study, called Impact 2000, is the union's way of directly finding out what its mem- bers think about -reforms from the govern= ment. He said while there have been many changes, including the new cur- riculum, OSSTF wants to find out if these changes have been for the better. The study survey start - ed a month ago and- Douglas ndDouglas said results should be released to the school boards, the public and the provincial gov- ernment in the spring. While Douglas wouldn't release any survey results yet, he did say teachers are showing concern over the province's changes and are eager to partici- pate in the survey. He said he hopes for a 15-20 per cent participation rate. Locally, Huzar said there are concerns about a lack of funding and the issue of schobl closures. Huzar said it should be made clear to the public that some schools in the Avon Maitland District School Board are facing closure because of cut- backs from the province, not because they're not .full or aren't fulfilling the needs of the community. He added the loss of a school to a rural commu- nity is particularly hard because the community often uses a school for many activities. While South Huron District High School doesn't face clo— sure, he said there is the threat of high school: clo- sures in Seaforth and Mitchell. Douglas and Huzar agreed the government 'has been making many mages at a rapid pace. 'What is the real aged - da?' Douglas asked, adding he wants to know if the province is trying to improve education or just save money. Fier concurred, say- ing;, "Evolution is more effective than revolution." He said the survey offers a chance for "all of us" to look at the state of the school system. In addition to teachers, OSSTF represents educa- tional assistants, custodi- ans, instructors and cleri- cal workers. The survey asks participants to rate many of the province's changes. to schools, including the new cur- riculum, funding, more student testing, the cre- ation of school councils and the elimination of five professional develop- ment days for staff. The survey also leaves a blank space for partici- pants to express their concerns. kms: X Exeter Mayor Ben Hoogenboom, Ausable-Bayfield Conservation Authority Vice Chairman Bill Dowson and UsborneTwp.
