Cashway buys five Do -It Center stores
HENSALL — Cashway
Building ,Centre has
bought five area Do -It
Center franchises.
The five franchises
include those in Exeter,
Zurich, Seaforth, Ilderton
and Forest. The sale of
the businesses is sched-
uled to be finished on Nov.
23 and does not include
the Parkhill Do -It Centre,
which the Hensall District
Co-operative (HDC) will
continue to run until it
can be sold.
The HDC made the
announcement last week.
HDC CEO Earl Wagner
said with the continuing
growth of HDC's elevator,
crop products, feed, petro-
leum and propane busi-
nesses, the retail lumber
and building supply busi-
ness did not fit HDC's
future business strategy.
The deal is worth $9
million, with the HDC
retaining ownership of the
property the five stores
are on. Cashway will lease
the property from HDC,
Wagner said.
Wagner said he is
pleased Cashway has
bought the five locations
and said Cashway intends
to maintain most of the
product lines in the s ...-res
and offer employmdlft to
all of the 50 full time and
60 part time employees.
- Wagner. said the money
from the sale of the busi-
&aesses will be used to
'Trhprove the HDC. -
He said the company
will continue to invest in
its global agri-business, .

all sales of $140 million
annually.

five Do -It Center stores,
Cashway Building Centre
will hake 66 stores in
Ontario.
Breast screening centre opens in Stratford
STRATFORD -- A new
breast cancer screening
centre is up and running in
Stratford.
The site opened in late
October along with -two
other screening sites in
Niagara Falls and Orillia,
bringing the total number
of breast screening centres
in Ontario to 48.
Since 1996, the govern-
ment has invested an addi-
tional $24 million to
expand the Ontario Breast
Screening Program (OBSP).
"We know that early
detection of breast cancer
saves lives," said Health
and Long -Term Care
Minister Elizabeth Witmer.
"And it is in order to save
lives that the government
is providing five times as
much funding for breast
cancer screening as it did
in 1995."
The OBSP screens
150,000 women annually
--- an increase of 40 per
cent over last year and the
goal is to screen 325,000

women every year.
It's estimated 7,400
Ontario women will devel-
op breast cancer this year
and about 2,100 will die.
Research shows early
detection can reduce the
number of deaths from
breast cancer by about 30
per cent for women age 50
and over. Routine mam-
mography screening has
not been shown to reduce
deaths from breast cancer
in women under 50.
The main risk factors for
breast cancer are age, pre-
vious breast cancer and a
family history of pre-
menopausal breast cancer
in a mother or sister.
However, more than 70
per cent of breast cancers
occur in women with no
known risk factors.
Women may be referred
to an OBSP by their family
doctor or they may call to
make an appointment.
Women who are screened
by the OBSP receive follow-
up invitations so they can
be rescreened every two
years.
Other area breast screen-
ing sites include llistowel,
Walkerton and London.
