Central Huron staff member Steve Oliver and former Hensall Public School principal Dave Kemp explained the computer driven project is a. resource and not a course. Kemp taught in the north from 1967 to 1974 and has made one trip back since that time. He said the Inuit pop- ulation thrives on tech- nology and related the story of one Inuit who has a spear belonging to his grandfather hanging on one wall with a computer at the other side of the room. Nunavut has just recently been organized as a territory. The new government has 19 member councillors from across the wide and expansive area and is non-partisan without any party affiliations. Nunavut is, a large ter- ritory covering an area to the north from Newfoundland to Alberta, but has only one time zone. Friday's presentation revealed the great ' advances the Inuit peo- ple have made in com- parison to the slides shown at the same meeting a year ago by Rev. Arnold Ruskell who spent the early 1940's in the north. This Friday afternoon, November 5, a plaque commemorating the life of the late Hon. William Proudfoot (1855-1922) will be unveiled in Goderich at Maitland and Nelson streets, jointly by the town of Goderich and the his- torical society. Proudfoot was born in Colborne Township and educated at Goderich and Osgoode Hall. N" rose to prominence as lawyer and serve 4 the provincial legis ture from 1908 to 1919. For the last two years. he was leader of the Liberal opposition in the assembly and was called to the Senate' of Canada where he sat until his death in 1922. The 1999 Huron Historical notes focus on the early military history of Huron County from 1793 to 1914. Editor Jens Schoenbank says next year's notes will complete Huron's military history cover- ing the period from 1914' to the closing of CFB Vanastra in 1971. Some of Huron's mili- tary sons not only helped form the nature of the country; but also contributed to the expansion westward and participated in every military crisis up to the Great War. Schoenbank contin- ued, "In preparing the material for this issue I was again drawn into the debate of what makes history - great men or great ideas. Here we have fodder for both sides of the argument. Colonel Anthony Van Egmond resorted to rebellion to further his idea of equi- table, democratic par- ticipation. J.A.Murray Clerk -Administrator County of Huron Court House Qoderich, Ontario N7A 1M2 The idea of "liberat- ing" Canada, possibly exchanging it for a free Ireland, motivated the Fenians creating the scares and invasion of 1866. General Sir William Otter, born just south of Clinton, started his active military career in that fracas and went on to .take part in the suppression of the. Northwest Rebellion and in the Roer War; his ideas of .Jilitary efficiency and effectiveness pervaded all his efforts to create a Canadian army. Then there is the idea of Empire, inculcated through the school sys- tem, creating a whole generation ready to fight "the war to end all wars."
