they can qualify for.

The five girls gathered
at Clandeboye's
Hearthstone Farm, the
home of Veinot's mount,'
a Welsh pony named
Bayview Better B Sharpe,
to be interviewed and
photographed.
Veinot's mom, Donna
Nelles, said only the top
12 small ponies. (12.2
hands tall and.under)
and the top 12 medium
ponies (12.2-13.2 hands)
from the 'A' circuit are
invited to the Royal
Winter, adding having so
many qualifiers from the
area is extraordinary.
Nelles said all five girls
are excited at the oppor-
tunity.
"This is the biggest
indoor fair in Canada,"
she said, adding the
Royal Winter show is far
as the girls can go at this
age in pony competition.
Judges at the Royal
Winter will evaluate only
the ponies, not the rid-
ers, on their form over
fences (jumping), on the
flat and way of going.
There will be three over
fences classes and one
flat class.
To qualify for the Royal
Winter, each rider and
their pony had to attend
about 12 major horse
shows where they accu-
mulated points based on
the rating of the show
and how many competi-
tors in each chess.
Veinot and her mount
finished 11th in Ontario
in small ponies; Vimy
Henderson and
Tinkerbell placed fourth
in small; Jackie
Henderson on Flirt fifth;

ond in small; Mallory

iOth in medium; Blair

Veinot is leasing
Bayview till her own
pony, Cinnamon, is ready
to show. She said she
likes jumping best of all
about showing ponies
and just loves to ride.
"They're good compan-
ions," she said. "They're
sort of like dogs. You can
play with them."
Mallory Myers said
competing in shows is "a
lot of fun.
"You're like the only
person there," she said.
All of the young riders
admitted they'd love to
grow up and have
careers involving ponies
or horses.

dent at Biddulph Central
School; Vimy Henderson
and- Meghan Devlin are

same school.
Hawks/Irish rivalry
off to ornery
Continued from page 22
While the Hawks are fly-
ing high, the Irish didn't
appreciate Exeter's exu-
berant after game celebra-
tion or claims the Hawks
have proven they will be a
force come the playoffs. In
fact, co -coach Jason
Bukala was left with such
a sour taste in his mouth
he decided to stir the pot
on Monday in an interview
with the T -A. He said
Exeter didn't face a com-
plete Irish team that was
short several regulars for a
number of reasons.
"The Exeter Hawks have
a long way to go before
they contend with our
hockey team at the end of
the season," Bukala said.
"You (meaning Friyia)
haven't got a clue what it
takes to get there (to an
all -Ontario Jr. D champi-
onship)."
In all, 11 Irish rookies
including several affiliated
players cracked the lineup
versus Exeter.
An injury to captain Chad
Greenlee during the Mount
Brydges game on Oct. 20
(knee, out for a month)
also found the team short
up front.
Despite the loss to their
hot rivals* Bukala said he
wasn't disappointed with
his team's play.
"The kids worked as
hard as they could," he
said.
Earlier in the week
Lucan lost at home to
Mount Brydges 6-4. The
Irish couldn't get going in
the first period and found
themselves down 3-0 at
the intermission. The Irish
regrouped to play better in
the second and dominate
the third period but could-
refea ch up.
Scott Phillips scored the
first and last goals for
Lucan, the first assisted by
Wagner and Darryl
Parsons, the second from
Scott Wheatley and Roy
Davis. Chad Lambourn
(from Smith) and Burns
(from Wheatley and
Parsons) also scored for
Lucan.
Both teams had only 20
shots and Bukala said its
tough to win with so few
shots and so many goals
against.
The game had an ugly
ending with Wheatley and
Phillips both involved in
fights with less than a
minute left in the game.
The Irish traded defence -
man Adrian Capra for
Parkhill -North Middlesex
rightwinger Ed Etheridge
on the weekend. Etheridge
promises to be an impact
player with Lucan since he
scored 25 goals last season
for the Stars and was
named the a division first
team all-star.
The Irish record stands
at5-4.
The Hawks host L' ambeth
on Friday, an 8:$0 p.m.
start, and the Irish host
Thamesford tonight (Oct.
27) at 8:15 p.m. and head
to Parkhill on Oct. 30.
