Panther field hockey tops in Huron -Perth yet again
EXETER — Champions...again.
The South Huron District High School
Held hockey team continued their domi-
nance in Huron -Perth by winning anoth-
er league title last week at home 1-0
over Mitchell.
Mitchell had upset the heavily
favoured Goderich in the semi-finals and
showed why early on in the final with
their tough, determined physical play in
the first quarter.
. Scoreless through regulation time,
Heidi Muller scored the winning goal
with three minutes left in the first over-
time frame and the Panthers held on
through the second overtime half to win.
The goal was disputed but the, officials
ruled it legal. It had looked like the
Panthers had a goal in the second half
but it was ruled no goal by the same
officials

Kelli Fulton earned the shutout
between the pipes for the Panthers with
many key saves.
After a shaky start where Mitchell
pressed for a goal, South Huron domi-
nated the rest of the game but couldn't
convert on several chances to score.
Panthers coach Jim Workman said it
was "a great victory against a physical
Mitchell team."
Both South Huron and Mitchell head to
London for the WOSSA championship
tournament on Oct. 29-30.
In South Huron's pool will be Medway
and Regina Mundi with Mitchell, North
Middlesex and Strathroy making up the
seoend pool.
The top two teams from each pool will
advance to the semi-finals on Saturday.
The WOSSA champion will move on to
OFSAA on Nov. 4-6.
r. D Hawks soar with three straight wins, Irish go 0 for 2

TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — The Exeter
Jr. D Hawks are on their
second three -game win-
ning streak of the season
after some impressive vic-
tories last week.
The highlight match for
the T -A readership was
the revival of the Hwy. 4
rivalry between the
Hawks and the Lucan
Irish. At home on Oct. 22,
the Hawks inched by
Lucan 5-4.
It didn't start out well
for the Hawks who found
themselves down 2-0
after the first period.
Lucan's Mike Burns
scored from Adam
Thomson 39 seconds into
the game. Ryan Keating
put the Irish up 2-0 with
an unassisted powerplay
goal with 3:36 left in the
period.
Exeter dominated the
second period which
ended up tied. 2-2 at the
.
buzzer. Dave Farquhar the powerplay from
got the Hawks onto the Wagner at the half -way
board by scoring with point of the third.

goals compared to them in the game.

Exeter was
up 2-1 after
the first but found them-
selves tied with their
hosts 4-4 at the end of the
second and were down 6-
4 in the third period
before mounting their
comeback.
Jarrett Jeffrey scored a
hat -trick for the Hawks
and captain Farquhar
notched the game tying
and game winning goals.
The tying goal came with
8:01 left in regulation
time and the winner with
44 seconds left in the
extra frame.
Also scoring for the
Hawks . were Jeremy
Vanbergen and Jon Miller
with assists going to
Jeremy Geoffrey (2),
Farquhar, Greg Pilling,
Chris Chatterson (2) and
Glover.
"(Bplmont is a) difficult
rink to be a goaltender
in," Friyia said, since the
tiny arena features next
to no room from the blue -
lines to the face-off cir-
cles.
Friyia added it feh good
beating the team that let
him go as an assistant
coach last season.
The Hawks finished
their winning week with a
3-0 home shutout over
Port Stanley. Mandarelli
got the ball rolling for
Exeter by scoring mid-
way through the first
while on the powerplay
from Glover and Geoffrey.
After a scoreless second
frame, Bourne scored on
the powerplay from
Mandarelli and
Vanliergen with 5:28 left
in the game and Jeffrey
put the game on ice by
scoring with 2:56 left
from Heikinnen.
011son faced 41 shots
compared -with the 21
Port goaltender Jason
Allison faced.
Friyia said the win is
especially impressive
since his squad had to kill
off a five-minute major
penalty given to
Chatterson for slashing
that spanned the end of
the second to a couple
minutes into the third
period.
"011son is giving us the
opportunity to win," he
said.
To keep up the torrid
pace, Friyia said his play-
ers "have to continue to
buy into the system."
Exeter's record is now
6-5, good for first place in
the Morenz Division over
Lucan.
The bad news of the
week for the Hawks is
Pilling is out six to eight
weeks with a broken
ankle sustained in a high
school football game.
Despite the injury to key
forward Pilling, Friyia is
confident his team will
continue to win if they
continue to work hard.
"We're the pretenders
on our way to being con-
tenders," he said.
