Guilty Lebeau awaits January sentence
GODERICH — Sarah
Lebeau was found guilty of
several charges in
Goderich court on Oct. 15
stemming from an acci-
dent that claimed the lives
of four people.
The year-long trial
focussed on the Nov. 24,
1996, single car accident
on Huron County Rd. 31
just north of Varna.
Superior Court Justice
Thomas Granger found
Lebeau, 22, guilty of four
•counts of criminal negli-
gence causing death, crim-
inal negligence causing
bodily harm, four counts of
impaired driving causing
death and one count of
impaired driving causing
bodily harm. The criminal
negligence causing death_
charges carry _a maximum
life in prison sentence.
Granger set Dec. 13 to
hear submissions from the
Crown and defence on
sentencing and said he'll
probably sentence Lebeau
in January. Lebeau was
remanded out of custody.
The ruling put an end to
the trial that has lagged on
for more than a year.
Granger said he believed
Lebeau was behind the
wheel of a '95 Camero that
slammed through a guard
rail at 150 km/h. Before
coming to a rest, the car
hit a ditch and a driveway,
became airborne and
anally'landed in a clump
qf trees.

and of Clinton, died at the
accident scene. Mark
Webster, 19, of Stanley
To hip, who was sched-
leave with Hill for
an ustralian trip the next
day, died in hospital about
two weeks later. Lebeau
and Brandon Gardner,
another passenger in the
Camero, were left serious-
ly injured.
The group of friends had
been at an all-night
farewell party for Webster
and Hill before the acci-
dent.
P.art of Lebeau's defence
was that Atchison was dri-
ving the car at the time of
the accident. Granger
rejected that defence,
pointing to evidence
Lebeau was seen driving
4
the car from the party and
was found after the acci-
dent with her legs entan-
gled in the driver well
area. She had also suf-
fered injuries consistent
with someone in the dri-
ver's seat and her DNA
was found on the driver's -
side airbag.
Granger also dismissed
testimony from an ortho-
pedic surgeon who chal-
lenged the autopsy sug-
gesting injuries indicating
Atchison was the driver
were missed. Granger also
rejected Lebeau's testimo-
ny that before 1998 she
had no memory of
Atchison driving the car
but remembered him dri-
ving after a 1998 crash re-
enactment.
