Winners of the Exeter Fire Department children's fire prevention week contest were announced at the Fire •

students map out their homes and come up with two ways to escape if there was a fire. One of the Exeter
student winners will be entered in the National Fire Prevention Association contest for a $ 10,000 trip for four
to Florida's Disney World.All homeowners in Exeter were encouraged to participate in the largest fire drill in
the world at 7 p.m. on Oct. 6, part of the North America -wide fire prevention week awareness program.
Celebrations in Granton

GRANTON - Jim and Willa Harding celebrated
Thanksgiving with a family gathering on Monday.
Special guests included Cora Lie Bidal from Dijon,
France, who is a friend of Katherine Harding at Carleton
University in Ottawa, and Stephen Whatman, husband of
Casandra Harding who arrived from New Zealand last
week.
Kent and Kari Harding were missing from the family
gathering as they left recently on another teaching expe-
dition in Korea until next July. -
Congratulations from the community to Chris and Pam
Hayes on the birth of their daughter Kahn Ann, sister of
Kurds and Colin, on September 28.

Wilfred and Gloria Riddell entertained at a family din-
ner on Saturday evening, , Oct. 9 when sister Jean Riddell
of Thunder Bay was home for the Thanksgiving week-
end.
Nora Wissel attended a familygatheringat the home of
daughter Audrey and husband Jim Scott of Clandeboye
on Sunday,- Oct. 10.
Sympathy is extended from the community to the fami-
lyHarry Squire S uire who died on Wednesday, Oct. 6.
Interment in the Granton Cemetery on Saturday Oct. 9.
Baby baptized
At the Granton United Church ,op Thanksgiving
Sunday, Oct. 10, Pastor Val Hodgins entitled the sermon
'Give Thanks'. The lessons from Exodus 32 and Matthew
22 were read by Andrew Bryan and the minister.
The Baptism of Hayden Gavin Kelso, son of Bryan and
He her Kelso was celebrated. Heather's membership
was also transferred from Duffs United Church, Walton.
Flowers were placed in the church from the funeral of
Harry Squire.
At St. Paul's Anglican Church, Kirkton on Thanksgiving
Sunday, Oct. 10. The lessons were read by John
Urquhart and the minister.

Wesley U.C. anniversary will be held next Sunday, Oct.
17 at 11 a.m. at which time there will be no service at
Granton.'

Plenty.
Several local bazaars were announced and business
discussion included arrangements for the next meeting
on November 4 and also a funeral Lunch.
Carlene Goos was in charge of the program on the
theme High Sights and Madeline Hardie had a contest
about apples, before the dose of the meeting.
Unit 2 met at the United Church on Monday evening,
Oct. 4.
Debbie Toll chaired the meeting opening with a poem
`Mothers' followed by a Parent's Prayer by Julie Riddell.
The group then worked on table centre pieces for the
bazaar tearoom.
Terry Herbert reported on some catering for an
upcoming anniversary and door greeters were arranged
for October. Plans were also made for the next meeting.
Julie Riddell then led a craft session on decorating can-
dles and as hostess served refreshments.
Unit 3 had a short business meeting at the church fol-
lowing a work session on September 29.
Unit 5 met on Friday afternoon,. Oct. 8 at the home of
Florence McRobert. Harlton chaired and opened the
meeting with readings `Thoughts to ponder' and 'We
gather together.' T* Thanksgiving scripture from Psalm
100 was read by Mary Wallis and from Luke 17 by
Florence McRobert.
4 H Achievement Night
Leader Margaret Bryan hosted the Granton 4H
Achievement program night for the project The• Power of
Produce on Thursday evening, Oct. 7.
Lenny Vandenberg and Mary Mcflhargey received spe-
cial awards for completing 12 projects. Others complet-
ing this project were Colleen O'Shea, Gemma
Vandenberg and Melissa Gollan and Melissa also had .the
best book:
Rural Youth- Co-ordinator Heather Small of RR1,
Denfleld attended and updated the group concerning
some changes that are being made in 4H work.
Annie Vandenberg won the prize for, the lucky chair
and Lenny Vandenberg conducted a memory game won
by Colleen O'Shea and friend Katie. Leader Jean
Mcll g made a,presentation to 'Margaret Bryan of a
gilt cep tl from the group In recognition of her ten
years as a 411 leader.
