Watch out for farrners on roads
HURON CTY. — The OPP detachments in the Exeter Times -Advocate cov-
erage area are asking motorists to keep a keen, cautious eye out for farm-
ers on the roads with their tractors .and other implements.
Farmers and their equipment have as much right on the road as any
other vehicle. They also have laws that have to be followed such as:
•Lights on the rear of the equipment at night;
*Giving the right of way to faster traffic on roads;
*Turning off work lights while traveling down the road at night;
*Vehicles with slow moving vehicle signs are not allowed to drive faster
than 40 km/h;
•Farm vehicles aren't allowed on 400 series highways.
The OPP advises motorists to be patient with farmers on the roads with
their tractors and combines.

County accepts
proposal on
amalgamation
By Scott Nixon
11MES-ADVOCATE STAFF
GODERICH — Huron County council has given its
blessing to the Bluewater amalgamation group.
The county accepted the group's amalgamation
proposal
last week, meaning the restructuring p
ro-
posal from the five municipalities will now go to
the Ministry of Municipal Affairs in Toronto.
The group consists of the villages of Hensall,
Zurich .and Bayfield and the townships of Hay and
Stanley.
If the amalgamation proposal is accepted by the
Ministry, Hay Township clerk -treasurer Janisse
Zimmerman told the T -A a transition board will be
established on Jan. 1, 2000, to begin working on
the major issues of amalgamation such as staffing
and property. That board will consist of all the
members of the five councils.
Hay Coun. Fred Campbell, who was a member of
the comrn#9`i►orking on the amalgamation .pro-
posal, said he was happy the county approved the
proposal and said it gaye him a sense of accom-
plishment.
Campbell said working on the committee was
tougher Than he thought it would be and said the
process took longer than -it should have.
Although he wouldn't be specific, he said there
were a lot of minor issues the committee debated
for too long.
Complicating restructuring matters is the possi-
bility the Town of Goderich will call in a commis-
sioner from the province to settle its boundary dis-
pute with Goderich Township.
This is significant because a commissioner called
into Chatham -Kent to deal with problems convert-
ed the city and county into one municipality and
Exeter Reeve Roy Triebner said in the T -A last
week he has concerns over a commissioner being
called into Huron County.
Campbell told the T -A he's not sure what will
happen concerning the Goderich issue. He said
he'd hate to see a commissioner called in and cre-
ate a single-tiergrvernment for the county, which
would quash the amalgamation efforts of
Bluewater and the South Huron group of Exeter,
Stephen and Usborne.
I hopea for our sake and (the Exeter group's)
)
sake . . he
don'tcall a commissioner in and
they •
throw something into the wheel again," Campbell
said. "I'd hate to see something else go wrong now
that we've gone this far."
If all goes well, the new Municipality of Bluewater
will become official on Jan. 1, 2001.
