EXETER -- It seems the
older the South Huron
District High School vol-
leyball team gets the
worse they fare against
the competition.
At least that's what it
looks like so far this sea-
son. The senior Panthers
won two out of six games
versus Wingham F.E.
Madill and Clinton St.
Anne's at the mini -tour-
nament held in Exeter
last Thursday (Sept. 30).
The seniors opened the
season by winning the
last three games and los-
ing the first three games
to host Goderich on
Tuesday (Sept. 28).
The week's worth of
games left the Panther
seniors with five wins in
12 games.
Senior coach Phil Conley
said the team's losing
record so far shows their
youth and inexperience.
"We're in every game
and every game is close
but we end up losing,"
Conley said.
The Panther juniors
were swept by Madill on
Thursday (18-25, 20-25
and 8-25) but brought out
the brooms against St.
Anne's (25-21, 25-15 and
25-13).
Coach Scott Halpenny
said Mark Laye with his
setting and spikes and
Lee Finkbeiner with
steady back court play
were his outstanding
players.
At Goderich last
Tuesday, the Panther
juniors lost two of three to
the hosts (17-25, 21-25
and 25-14) but swept
Clinton Central Huron
(25-21, 25-16 and 25-20).
Jesse Schroeder and
Kieran O'Rourke were the
day's best players for
South Huron, Schroeder
for his spikes and blocks
and O'Rourke for his set-
ting.
Halpenny said the first
year juniors will take
some time to learn the
new systems. He added
there is the potential for
some quality play through
the season.
The Panther midgets got
off to a roaring start.
Travelling to Goderich for
their first matches last
Tuesday, the Panthers
won two of their three
games against Goderich
losing their third game
27-25.
In the next match
against Central Huron,
the Exeter squad soundly
defeated the team three
straight.
"Chad Smith and Jason
Stuckless showed their
expertise in the serving
position," coach Deb Lord.

EXETER — You can
officially call the South
Huron District High
School senior girls basket-
ball team the 'cardiac
kids'.
The Panthers came
from behind to snatch! a
32-31 victory from the
visiting St. Anne's squad
on a basket from Kelli
Fulton with only three
seconds left in the game.
Fulton scored the basket
after an excellent pass
from Jessica Davies who
led the way offensively for
the Panthers with 11
points.
Marilou Hern had six
points for South Huron
while Jamie Reaburn and
Kerri Fulton both had
four points.
The win brings the
senior Panthers Huron
record to 2-1.
The Panther junior girls
led for much of their
game versus St. Anne's
but couldn't hold on due
to good shooting by St.
Anne's and ended up on
the wrong end of the 44-
43 final score.
Jillian Jones netted 10
points for South Huron
and Danielle Knip had
nine.
Coach Nicole Kovats
said Allison Hayward and
Nikki Cyr contributed
excellent rebounding
throughout the game.
The loss puts the juniors
Huron record at 1-2.

feated for the day. The
first match showed Exeter
winning the first two
games by a close 25-23
score while their third
game was won quite
readily 25-16.
The next match against
opponents from St.
Anne's saw some great
rally play between the
two teams. Again, the
home squad defeated
their opponents in three
straight games.
"Will Boulam's finesse
on the court, Jesse
McCann's serving ability,
big hits by Jeff
Beauchamp and prowess
displayed by setters Ryan
Knee, Wes Johnson,
Everette Dionne and
Justin Muller helped
South Huron in their
wins," Lord said. "The
boys displayed some
strong volleyball tactics in
front of the home squad."
The seniors competed in
the Stratford
Northwestern tournament
on the weekend and
walked away with only
one win in eight pool play
games.
The Huron league is
getting used to the new
rally point scoring system
where a point is awarded
with every rally regard-
less of who is serving.
The Panthers next host
St. Anne's and Goderich
on Oct. 14.
On Saturday South
Huron beat Goderich `B -
team' 34-16 with Hern
scoring eight points and
Reaburn contributing
seven points.
In the consolation final
versus Goderich with only
seven players, the
Panthers played an
inspired game but lost 32-
18 with Hern and
Reaburn each scoring six
points. •
Coach Terry O'Rourke
said the team played well
throughout the tourna-
ment and continue to
improve.
The junior Panthers
travelled to Aylmer for a
weekend tournament.
The team got off to a
rocky start versus the
strong and quick host
East Elgin team and lost
49-16.
The juniors rebounded
with a 39-21 win over
Delhi. Coach Nicole
Kovats said the entire
team played excellent
defence and Amanda
Wuerth came alive to
score 17 points.
The win put the
Panthers in the bronze
medal game versus East
Elgin. This time South
Huron used its great
defence and rebounding
to take the bronze medal
with a 35-25 win. Cyr
dominated on both
offence and defence to
score 18 points and win
the team all-star award.

"I'm still working on the
old guys," Timmermans
said.
New at forward are ex
Hawks Chris McDonald,
Jeff Glavin and Kennedy
and former Irish player
Andy Marshall.
Timmermans is expect-
ing big things from two
former St. Marys Jr. B
players: Sheldon Lacroix
and Dave Landers. The
two forwards are expect-
ed to improve Hensall's
offensive punch this sea-
son. Both are originally
from Timmins and came
to the area when they,
signed with St. Marys.
Lacroix has also played
with the London Sr. A
Admirals.
"We're going to be a lit-
tle more offensive and be
more aggressive in their
end," Timmerman said
of the team's style of play
this season.
Youth and speed will be
two of Hensall's strong
points as well as the
goaltending.
The Sherwoods open
the regular season at
home Oct. 9 at 7:45 p.m.
versus Monkton.
