Hessenland Inn brings a touch of Europe to Huron
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
ST. JOSEPH — Ninety
wine connoisseurs gath-
ered at Hessenland
Country Inn on Saturday
for the 6th Annual
Gourmet Wine Tasting
Event.
Hessenland co-owner
Christa Ihrig said the
event is intended to bring
to Canada some tradition
from her native Germany,
where wine tastings are
commonplace during har-
vest time. She said patrons
at Hessenland wishing to
know more about various
wines come from as far
away as Michigan and
Toronto.
Last weekend's wine
tasting featured a seven -
course gourmet meal.
Each meal featured a dif-
ferent wine.
Guest speaker Kyle
Harrison, whose company
supplies some of the wine
at Hessenland, said he and
the staff at Hessenland
have been working on
matching the meals with
the appropriate wines
since June.
He also offered a few tips
for inexperienced wine
tasters. To learn about
wine, Harrison suggested,
"drink it often ... and try
everything."
To get the proper taste
from a wine, Harrison said
a person must use their
eyes, nose and mouth.
The evening included
two Canadian wines, three
from Australia and one
from Italy.
Meals included tartar of
yellow fm tuna, pheasant,
lamb shanks and prawns.
There was also a sorbet
and a dessert. Ihrig's son
Frank did the majority of
the cooking.
Ihrig told the T -A on
Monday she is pleased
with how the event went
and said Ilessenland will

dinner every year on the
first Saturday in October.
The event features a dif-
ferent menu and wine
selection every year, Ihrig
said, adding that while
Hessenland serves wines
from countries,such as
South Africa and
Australia, they also sup-
port local wines.
Open for 15 years, Ihrig
stresses Hessenland is a
good location for couples
to get married — couples
can get married and have
pictures taken in
Hessenland's garden, and
there is room for a recep-
tion of 200 people.
Hessenland also has 16
rooms available for
overnight stay.

BEST SELLING PLANS OF THE DECADE 1991
As the baby boomers get closer to retirement, a larger segment of the home buying market is
requesting one level rancher designs. Our second installment in our Best Sellers feature is a compact
rancher which received a good response when it was released in 1991, and is still going strong.
Low square footage and a simple roof and foundation pian should help keep construction costs down,
and, at only 35'0" wide, this home will fit on a variety of narrow lots.
Although scaled down from the "family size" larger home, this design still offers a formal living and
dining room, and an informal kitchen and family room area. An open plan for the kitchen and family
room creates a more spacious "country kitchen" style atmosphere made cozy with the addition of a
wood stove.
Plans for NB -478 may be obtained for $375.00 for a package of five complete sets o0working prints
and $30.00 for each additional set of the same plan. Allow $20.00 extra to cover the cost of courier
and handling (B.C. residents add 7% PST to plan total.) All Canadian residents add 7% GST to plan
total plus courier.
This is one of our new designs. Many innovative plans are now available in our NEW catalogue:
Ranchers and Ranchers with Basements, which is available for $8.51, including postage and handling
and GST.
