EXETER — The Alz- heimer Society of Huron County has recognized Huron Bruce MPP Helen Johns for her participa- tion in the Alzheimer Strategy. Johns was one of the key players in the strat- egy's infancy five years ago and worked ex- tensively on the report which will see the prov- ince invest $68.4 million over the next five years. The strategy has ten points. 1. Staff education and training in long term caro.facilities, CCAC and day program for clients. 2. Physician training. 3. Increase in public ar'l rareness through the funding of one education coordinator for 39 chap- ters in Ontario. 4. Planning for ap- propriate, safe and se- cure environments. 5. Respite services for caregivers. 6. Research on care- giver needs. 7. Advanced directives on care choice. 8. Psychogeriatric con- sulting resources. 9. Co-ordinated spe- cialized diagnosis and support policy review. 10. Intergenerational volunteer initiative Johns and Health Min- ister Elizabeth Witmer delivered the announce- ment Sept. 10. r Crimes of the Week Equipment damaged On July 11, 1999, during the early morning hours, construction equipment belonging to H. Kerr Construction was heavily damaged and set ablaze, at the . Exeter lagoons in Stephen Twp. The total cost of the damage is estimated between $15,000 and $20,000. The suspects drove a large piece of con- struction equipment around called a packer, and rammed trailers causing severe damage to the site and other equipment. Break and enter On Oct. 1, 1999, between 12:20 p.m. and 2:14 p.m. a daylight break and enter occurred at part lot 24 concession 4 of Tuckersmith Twp., RR #3 Kippen, at the home of John McLachlan. Entry was gained through a door to the garage, then from the garage to the kitchen area. Once inside, the culprit(s) removed tools, home electronics, computer compo- nents and a black leather briefcase. POLICE BRIEFS • POLICE BRIEFS TUCKERSMITH TWP. — Someone freed some cattle from a Tuckersmith Conc. 3 farm on Sept. 29. The cattle were report- ed loose at about 10:15 a.m. The cattle owner told the Huron OPP offi- cer fficer that someone . had disconnected the leads to the electric fence. The lock on the gate was then cut allowing the cattle in the pen to roam free. The cattle then wan- dered down the road into another farmer's corn field damaging some of the crop. Marks on the cut lock point to 'the use of bolt cutters. Anyone with informa- tion on this crime is asked to call the Huron Tractor pull raises $10,000 CLINTON — The Farm Credit Corporation and corporate teams raised $10,000 for two charities at the Great Little Trac- tor Pull at the Inter- national Plowing Match Sept. 21. "The ,event was fun for all participants and, best of all, it raised money to help out two local char- ities — Phoenix of Huron and Rural Response for Healthy Children," said Corlette Elder, acting FCC District Manager for Clinton. Thirteen corporate and two charity teams took part: Clarica Life In- surance Co., Exeter; Cov- er -All Building Systems, Lucknow; Culligan Real Estate Ltd., Mitchell; Farm Business Con- sultants, London; Huron Tractor Ltd., Exeter; FCC, Clinton; Huron Business Development Corp., Seaforth; Scotia Group, Exeter; Famme & Co., Stratford; John Nor- ris's Accounting Office, Exeter; Rural Response for Healthy Children, Clinton and Phoenix of Huron, Clinton. Each team raced a mini -tractor around a track, stopping to load and unload potatoes. Participants were al- lowed to only use one hand. Huron Tractor won the trophy for the fastest time, Scotia Group won the prize for best costumes and John Norris's Accounting Of- fice took the Blooper Prize. The corporate teams each pledged $500 that FCC matched dollar for dollar.
