EXETER — Three lousy
periods made the differ-
ence in the first three
games of the 1999-2000
season for the Exeter Jr.
D Hawks.
The Hawks went 1-2 on
the three games, losing
the home opener in
Hensall Friday night 8-4
to Thamesford and 8-2 at
Port Stanley Saturday.
The Hawks Finished the
weekend on a high note
by doubling North
Middlesex 6-3 at Parkhill
on Sunday.
Captain Dave Farquhar
fired up Exeter's offence
versus Thamesford with
two goals while Jon Miller
and Jeff Glover each
scored .a goal.
Veteran defenceman
Ben McCann assisted on
three goals while Glover,
Greg Pilling and Chris
Chatterson all picked up
an assist each.
Jason Manderelli and
Jason'G"renier'1tored
Exeter's goals in the Port
Stanley game while Jared
Bourne and McCann
assisted on Grenier's
marker.
Shawn Sherwood scored
back to back goals in the
North Middlesex game
with single goals scored
by Chris Stuckless,
McCann, Miller and
Glover.
Farquhar and Glover
each helped out on two
goals with single assists
notched by Miller,
Chatterson, Bourne,
Stuckless, Nick Regier,
McCann and Chris
Corlette.
Hawks coach Andy
Friyia said the big and
experienced Thamesford
and the Port
Stanley
squad, fea-
turing several
former
London Jr. B
Nationals,
"were not the
ideal teams to
with." off
Friyia was happy with
his team's play over six of
' the nirisr periods played
on the weekend but was
dejected over three peri-
ods: the second versus
Tha fot
scored against), the third
versus Port Stanley (five
unanswered goals scored
against) and the third ver-
sus North Middlesex (10
shots against with only
three for).
The Hawks started both
games they lost in fine
fashion. Exeter led
Thamesford 2-0 after the
first period and trailed
only 3-2 versus Port
Stanley after two periods.
Friyia said he has iden-
tified the main problem:
"substandard goaltend-
ing.""
Exeter's two main
goalies, bean
Kluke and
Damon
O'Quinn
haven't been
up to snuff so
far, Friyia
said, adding
all three
goalies,
including
Ryan Sullivan, are still
vying for the top job.
"I'm desperately search-
ing for the number one
goaltender," he said.
"They're all still in the
ire goals hunt."
Friyia didn't rule out
bringing an outside goal -
tender to the fold to fill
the number one void.
Some positives have
been shown despite the
losing record.
"Ben McCann had a
weekend second to none,"
Friyia said, adding the
veterans are playing out-
standing.
The Hawks also have
lots of speed.
"When we skate like we
can, we can skate with
any team in the league,"
Friyia said.
Exeter's powerplay
accounted for six of the
team's total 12 goals on
the weekend while the
opposition scored four
goals on their own power -
plays.
Friyia still maintains the
Hawks will compete for
first place in the division
with some development
when the goaltending
problem is solved.
The Hawks next host
North Middlesex at
Hensall Arena on Oct. 1 at
8:30 p.m.
"I'm desperately
searching for the
number one
goaltender...They're
all still in the hunt."
