Times Advocate, 1999-09-29, Page 1414 Exeter Yime -Advocate Community Wednesday, September 29, 1999 Volunteers needed for Block Parent Program EXETER -The Block Parent Program in your community is looking for volunteers to expand their safety net- work of homes. "Working together with educators and police, Block Parent vol- unteers make your community safer," said Rose Marie Danylo Brien, president of the Block Parent Program of Canada. During National Block Parent Week, Oct.' 24- 30, 1999, the :Block Parent Program is actively recruiting vol- unteers in cities throughout Canada. Block Parents are responsible adults who care sufficiently about the well-being of chil- dren and others to vol- unteer their homes as a temporary refuge in an emergency. All Block Parents are screened by the .police and instructed on local programs by volunteers. The distinctive red and white Block Parent window sign is dis- played in the window of a home when an adult is available to answer the door. The sign tells children, seniors and others that help is at hand If they are lost, frightened or in distress. Through the 1byes of a child, the unexpected can be frightening. It may be just a bark- ing dog or a scraped knee or a potentially more dangerous situa- tion such as being harassed by bullies or frightened .by a stranger. You can help them feel safe by becoming a Block Parent in your neighborhood. Join the many volun- teers from coast to coast who care about the safety of their com- munity. Become a volunteer today. For more information, contact Lois Godbolt at 235-0691; local police or call the Block Parent Program of Canada at 1-800-663-1134.
