Shooters Jamie Caldwell, Brad Mann, Ernie Marshall, Don Dolbear and Keith Saunders finished firs. t at the annual fall five -man shoot at the Michigan State Trapshooters Association homegrounds in Mason, Michigan on Sept. 12. The five. men . won fancy silver buckles and $100 U.S. each for the win. The team finished with a total 490 out of 500 tar- gets. Caldwell blasted 99, Mann 97, Marshall 94 and Dolbear and Saunders both notched perfect 100s. The shoot featured 192 teams from throughout the U.S. and Canada. "It is probably the biggest team shoot around," Caldwell said. "It's a tough shoot to win." The ,win is the second at the event for a Kippen team: Kippen claimed the prize in '97. A Kippen team tied for first in '95 but lost in a shoot -off. Caldwell called the com- petition "nerve-wrack- ing." 1 think it's more you've done well throughout the year and you want to keep it up," he said. Although a huge shoot, the Michigan State fall event pales in ciomparison with the Grand American held each year In Vandalia, Ohio. Caldwell said the Grand American is the largest trapshooting event in the world. The site features traps that span a mile an a half long. Wednesday, September 22, 1999 Caldwell said the Kippen Gun Club was established by his grand- father over 50 years ago. Though not active for all of those years, Caldwell said the club has been constantly active for the last 20 years. Success at trapshooting takes .hours upon hours of practice. "A lot of shells and a lot of money," Caldwell said, adding trapshooting is an expensive sport with the purchase of a shotgun and the thousands of shells it takes to hone your aim.
